What is happening nationally? • Many state and district officials say textbook publishers are scrambling to catch up with the common standards and few, if any, materials that truly align are available. • …. it's not simply a matter of flipping a switch to have instruction at all grade levels reflect the new standards. What is happening nationally? • The Howard County district, Maryland, is working on many fronts to implement the standards, from providing professional development to revamping its curriculum, in an effort to be sure schools are ready for all the changes to the what, when, and how of math instruction envisioned with the common core. What is South Dakota doing?What is your state doing? • Statewide professional development for ELA and Mathematics teachers K-12. • Work groups disaggregating the Common Core Standards and writing kid friendly learning targets • Work groups developing blueprints to help guide your instruction • Work groups curating the best lessons on the web and aligning them to the common core standards • Work groups analyzing the new SmarterBalanced assessments to assure they are well-developed and appropriate for our students.
