  3. Childhood • Bharatendu Harishchandra was born on September 9, 1850 in Varanasi. His father Gopal Chandra was also a poet and it was from his father that Bharatendu Harishchandra derived the inspiration to write in his later life.

  4. Life and work Bharatendu Harishchandra is one of the most heard names in the history of modern Hindi literature. He was a coming up poet of the 19th century who also wrote several novels and plays. It was the subject and pattern of his writings which caught the attention of the critics and the masses and made Bharatendu Harishchandra such a popular name in Hindi literature.

  5. Major works Drama- Bharatendu Harishchandra entered in theatre activity as an actor and soon become director, manager, and playwright. He used theatre as a tool to aware Indian society. his major plays are:- 1-Vaidiki himsa hitnsa na bhavati ,1873 2-Bharat durdasha ,1875 3-The mythological classic Satya Harishchandra i.e. `Truthful Harishchandra` in 1876 4-Neel devi ,1881 5-The political Andher nagari i.e. City of Darkness in 1881

  6. DeathBharatendu Harishchandra passed away on January 6, 1885 at the age of 35, at his hometown Varanasi. His writings are still held in high regard by Hindi literature lovers all over the world.
