DIII-D Context: High Priority Research Group to Focus on 3-D Field Induced Transport in FY11 to address ITER design needs (time critical) • Additional activities: - Diagnostic Initiative (Dan Thomas with GA and PPPL participants) - Three year planning process (FY11-13) led by Todd Evans • FES theory milestone planned for FY12 – Reiman to discuss The DIII-D Research Opportunities Forum (ROF) is scheduled for Dec. 7-9

Focus of High Priority DIII-D WG in FY11 is to Test and Validate 3-D Field Induced Transport Models for Extrapolation to ITER Moyer, APS 2010 • Enhanced particle transport over a broad range of q95 appears a key element in ELM suppression – not necessarily the only element. • Understanding how this transport scales to ITER is a key element in assessing 3-D field control needs in ITER

  3. Focus of the Task Force on 3-D Field Induced Edge Transport • The ultimate goal is to make a recommendation to ITER on what external magnetic perturbation is required to suppress/mitigate ELMS in high performance plasma • Understanding the edge transport modification induced by 3-D magnetic perturbations is an important part of the puzzle and central to the FY11 Task Force • Understanding the plasma magnetic response to external 3-D magnetic perturbations is critical to understanding transport. - MHD plasma models need to be validated against experiment - transport models need to use the plasma MHD response - convection, nonambipolar fluxes, ExB shearing of turbulence,… • Corollary: Does the magnetic perturbation need to be externally applied? - Is EHO and RMP enhanced transport based on the same physics? - Can the EHO be excited in ITER?

  4. How Can PPPL Contribute to the Understanding of Transport Enhancement Induced by 3-D Fields? • Charge for this meeting: • What experiments can be performed to distinguish between the different transport mechanisms? – near term • What new measurements can be performed with existing or new diagnostics to identify the mechanism of transport enhancement? • What modeling tools already exist that can quantitatively address 3-D field induced transport enhancement – 6 to 12 month time frame • What new modeling tools need to be developed to address the transport physics – longer term planning • The DIII-D Research Opportunities Forum (ROF) is scheduled for Dec. 7-9, 2010: Our discussion should also feed into the research forum
