  2. Research Question • Our research question is: Compared to HSES students, what do their parents know about where their energy resources are generated and how willing will they be to switch to alternative electricity?

  3. Hypothesis • HSES students learn about the environment on a daily basis. Their parents however may not have the same opportunities. As a result parents will not know a wealth of information pertaining to where their electricity comes from and may not be as willing to change to an alternative.

  4. Introduction • The purpose of this study is to use a survey to find out what freshman students who attend the High School for Environmental Studies and their parents know about where their energy comes from and how much they consume. We also want to know how willing parents and students would be to switch to an alternative. We expect that the students will know more than their parents because they learn about the environment on a daily basis and they have a better understanding of the benefits.

  5. Methods • Distribution: Surveys were distributed to one Environmental Seminar class, with 37 returned; 19 from students, 18 from parents • Our Survey included questions such as Where does electricity for New York City come from, Do you know if Con Edison provides clean energy options, If Con Edison provided green electricity options, I would choose them and demographic questions to help us sort our data • Analysis: Our data was put into Excel and organized by multiple categories to find trends in our data

  6. Results

  7. Results This graph shows the responses from students for the question; does Con-Edison offer clean energy options? The responses revealed that 74% answered unsure, 16% answered no, and 11% answered yes. This graph shows the responses from adults for the question; does Con- Edison offer clean energy options? The responses revealed that 76% answered unsure, 12% answered no, and 12% answered yes.

  8. Results This graph shows the response to the question; Would you switch to a cleaner electricity options? For people with an income of $50-100,000. 25% disagree, 25% strongly agree, and 50% were unsure. This graph shows the response to the question; Would you switch to a cleaner electricity options? For people with an income of below $30,000. 37% were unsure, 12% strongly agree, 25% agree, 13% disagree and 13% strongly disagree.

  9. Discussion and Conclusions • We discovered many trends in our data, one of the most important being nobody really knew a lot about electricity • Most responses to questions such as would you choose a zero emission energy source or if Con Edison provides a lot of information on electricity were unsure, which probably resulted from a lack of education about electricity • Students also demonstrated that they could correctly identify actually New York City’s electricity resources while adults favored more renewable resources
