  4. Old Media

  5. Is old media still relevant? Old Media

  6. The main areas of old media are • Television • Radio • News Papers • Books • Music Studios • Magazines Old Media

  7. How far have we really stepped away from our traditional ways of communicating? • We still rely heavily on the basis of old formats. Old media

  8. Radio in Ireland still remains on a very similar format to what it has been since the our first broadcast. • RTE Radio 1 is Irelands if not Europe's oldest running broadcast, it celebrated 80 years of uninterrupted broadcasting in January 2006. • All of the stations in Ireland barring those who broadcast on DAB Multiplexes, broadcast on an FM. Old VS New Media

  9. DAB- Digital radio in Ireland is only currently available to 56% of the population. • Very few counties in Ireland including Co. Cork, Limerick and the North East can receive a permanent DAB services. • There is still a long way to go before DAB becomes available to the entire population. • The need for Digital radio in Ireland was not as much as a priority in comparison to our need for an updated TV delivery system. DAB- Digital Audio Broadcasting

  10. Here are some of the comparisons of the evolution of Old into New media in Ireland. Television from Analog to Digital: • Analog signal was developed in the 1950’s to deliver black and white signal with mono sound. • Ireland has made the switch because the analog signal could not carry the full range of features digital could carry. • Television is still highly regarded as a main source of new media. Old VS New Media

  11. The Irish word Saor means free. • Saorview carries specifically Irish channels including Irish radio stations which can be played through your television at digital quality. • Ireland has only very recently made the switch from an analog signal to digital. 24th of October 2012 to be precise. • Our old analog signal became outdated and unfriendly towards the progression of a more involved nation. • Similarities in old and new. • TV scheduling was almost a family ritual. Every Sunday or even weekly in the post you would get the TV guide and start the long process of physically highlighting what you wanted to watch for the week. In some cases war would ensue and family feuds would be the norm. Saorview

  12. TV Scheduling- Just like you would now go online to check your local cinema times, the TV guide is available in a similar way, an evolution from paper into paperless is the only noticeable change. If anything the reasons or the benefits of online guides is that it is paperless and people can be targeted directly with personalised advertising. • It seems to boil down to the internet. The internet has created a bench mark that seems to have no ending in sight. We don’t just watch our television sets like we used to, we interact through a second screen, we talk, tweet, text, type and think of how to best use our time effectively. Saorview Continued

  13. Saorview Continued • We do not have to wipe the dust of an old video tape in fear of recording over our parents wedding video anymore, a click of a button and later that day our program's are there waiting for us, but the ideas are the same. • Old is never bad, not as long as we progress while we reflect on how we got to where we are now.

  14. Old media is still a highly respected subject. • Not only do we have all of the old formats to thank, but we have to maintain some sort of tribute to them. • A tribute perhaps through a notion that the New Media formats are the Grandsons and Granddaughters of Old Media. • They still work. Summary on Old Media

  15. Edward R. Murrow (1908-1965): ‘To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box. Good night, and good luck.’

  17. Effects on Traditional Media • The division of ‘old and new’ has merged into a single entity of simply ‘media’. • Time shifted viewing • Promotion and advertising

  18. The way in which television now evolves is greatly shaped by the internet. • While the internet challenges the role of dominance which television previously occupied, one can also note it has also ‘joined forces’ with the more traditional forms of media. • Traditional forms of media including television, is no longer distanced from the general public. The public can interact and post their own information. Society is encouraged to become involved rather than excluded. Focusing on Television

  19. This has effected all forms of traditional broadcasting i.e. news, entertainment etc. • Advertising and promotion • Transmedia has developed Social media has had the greatest impact on traditional broadcasting.

  20. Facts: • Year: 2011 • Irish Presidential Election • National Television debate • Channel RTÉ 1 • Presenter referenced a tweet which turned out to be false • Station apologised to candidate • Staff members faced disciplinary action Campaign Sabotage?

  21. Promotion/media stunts - producer Sue Vertue tweeted: “Hey #Sherlock fans of London. Keep your eyes peeled in the morning rush hour and pay your respects’” • BBC One has changed its Twitter name to #SherlockLives. • Twitter has been sent into a fan-frenzy, with the hashtags #SherlockLives #r3spects and #Sherlock all trending. Case Study – BBC Sherlock

  22. The way in which media is generated and distributed has evolved into something much more fluid • The viewer now has control and they decide their viewing schedule. • New media has forced traditional media forms to react quicker • Social media campaigns are now essential and part of the television industry • Shows must live outside the television screen Summary
