  11. New Initial-Eligibility Standards for Practice and Athletics Aid • First, the current qualifier standard remains in place for freshmen to receive athletically related financial aid and practice in their first term in college. • Can continue to practice in their second term if they meet additional academic criteria during their first term. • Current standard is 16 core courses, meet the current sliding scale, minimum core-course GPA is 2.000.

New Initial-Eligibility Standard for Competition • Increased standards in order to compete in the first year of college. • Increased “sliding scale.” • Increased minimum core GPA of 2.300 in the 16 core courses currently required. • Additional core-course requirements as described on the next slide (i.e., 7/10 core).

  13. Additional Core-Course Requirements Successfully complete 10 core courses prior to seventh semester of high school. Seven of the 10 core courses must be in English, math and natural/physical science. These core courses (and grades) must be used in calculating the core-course GPA for purposes of meeting the sliding scale and GPA minimum. SAs will not be able to retake the course senior year to improve their grade for NCAA purposes – 7/10 are “locked-in.”

  14. Timeline for Implementing New Standards Effective for SAs entering any collegiate institution full time on or after August 1, 2016. These SAs are 2012-2013 freshmen.

  15. New Initial-Eligibility Standards -Three Possible Outcomes Full qualifier = competition, athletics aid and practice in first year. Academic redshirt = athletics aid in first year and practice in first regular term. Nonqualifier = no athletics aid, practice or competition in first year.

Full Qualifiers • SAs must meet the following standards in order to compete, receive athletics aid and practice in first year of collegiate enrollment: • Obtain a core-course GPA/test score that meets the new sliding scale coordinates. • Obtain a minimum core-course GPA of 2.300 in the 16 core courses currently required. • Meet core-course requirements described in the earlier slide(i.e., 7/10 core).

  17. Academic Redshirt • Academic redshirt: SAs may receive athletics aid in their first year in college and may practice in first term. No competition. • Must meet the current sliding scale; 16 core; 2.000 core GPA minimum. • Can earn practice in the second term by completing nine-semester or eight-quarter hours in the first term.

  18. Nonqualifiers No athletics aid, practice or competition in first year of collegiate enrollment. SAs who do not meet the academic redshirt standard are nonqualifiers.

Modification of Core-Course GPA Calculation Core-Course GPA Calculation • Ensure the integrity of the core-course GPA calculation and the core-course progression requirement by specifying that only the “best” 16 core courses shall be used for core-course GPA purposes, effective August 1, 2016. Sliding Scale • Replace the adopted competition sliding scale with an intermediate sliding scale; OR • Amend the 2016 effective date for the sliding scale changes.

  21. Modification of Sliding Scale for Competition Intermediate Sliding Scale vs. Adopted Sliding Scale * Core-course GPA increase is relative to current scale and represents an approximation. It is anticipated that both core-course grade-point averages and test scores will increase in response to the new standards. ** Predicted first-year college GPA outcomes are based on data available for SAs held to current initial-eligibility standardsand correspond with the academic profiles of those who meet the minimum competition standard.

  24. NEW Division ITwo-Year College Transfer Academic Requirements

Rationale for New 2-4 Transfer Standards • GPA at two-year institution is best predictor of academic success. • Physical education activity courses have negative correlation to academic success. • 75% of nonqualifiers currently transfer three or more credits. • 33% currently transfer nine or more. • Completion of core academic courses predictive of better academic success at four-year institution with science as a strong predictor.

  26. New Division I Two-Year College Transfer Academic Requirements (2-4) Requirements apply to SAs enrolling in college full time on or after August 1, 2012.

New Division I Two-Year College Transfer Academic Requirements – Qualifiers • Requirements to compete in the first academic year at a Division I institution: • Attend two-year college full time for at least one semester or quarter. • Transfer average of at least 12-semester or quarter credit hours for each full-time term at the two-year college. • Have a 2.500 GPA in all transferable hours. (New) • All SAs limited to two physical education activity hours from the two-year college to meet credit and GPA requirements. (NEW)

New Division I Two-Year College Transfer Academic Requirements – Nonqualifier • Requirements to receive athletics aid, practice and compete in the first academic year at a Division I institution: • Attend two-year college full time for at least three semesters or four quarters. • Earn an Associate of Arts or equivalent degree. continued…

New Division I Two-Year College Transfer Academic Requirements – Nonqualifier (continued) • Transfer at least 48-semester or 72-quarter credit hours, which include the following transferable credits: • Six semester/eight-quarter hours of English; • Three semester/four-quarter hours of math; and • Three semester/four-quarter hours of natural/physical science. (NEW) • Have a 2.500 GPA in all transferable courses. (New) continued…

New Division I Two-Year College Transfer Academic Requirements – Nonqualifier (continued) • What if an SA meets all of the requirements except for the GPA of 2.500? • The SA could receive athletics aid in their first academic year and practice in their first semester or quarter with a GPA of 2.000 or higher. • Practice for the remainder of the first academic year would be based on academic success at the Division I institution.

  34. 4-2-4 Transfer Requirements Complete an average of at least 12 semester or quarter hours of transferable degree credit for each term of full-time attendance at the two-year college following transfer from the four-year college most recently attended. Achieve a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.500. One calendar year has elapsed since the SA’s departure from the previous four-year college. Graduate from the two-year college.

  35. 4-2-4 Transfer Requirements (continued) • A SA that was not a qualifier shall have satisfactorily completed: • Six-semesters or eight-quarter hours of transferable English credit; • Three-semester or four-quarter hours of transferable math credit; and • Three-semester or four-quarter hours of transferable natural/physical science credit.

Progress Toward Degree Don’t forget...all 2-4 transfers to Division I must also meet the Division I progress-toward-degree requirements: • 40% of the degree must be completed by the start of the third year of full-time collegiate enrollment. • 60% of the degree must be completed by the start of the fourth year of full-time collegiate enrollment.

Division II Two-Year College Transfer Academic Requirements – Qualifiers with No Previous Attendance at a Four-Year Institution Attend the two-year college as a full-time SA for at least one full-time semester or one full-time quarter (excluding summer sessions); Complete an average of at least 12-semester or 12-quarter hours of transferable credit for each full-time academic term of attendance at the two-year college; and Present a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.000.

Division II Two-Year College Transfer Academic Requirements – Qualifiers (continued) Qualifiers who do not meet the requirements set forth in NCAA Division I Bylaw 14.5.4.1, may practice and receive athletics aid (but may not compete) at the certifying institution during their first academic year of residence.

Division II Two-Year College Transfer Academic Requirements – All Other Qualifiers, Partial Qualifiers, and Nonqualifiers • Attend the two-year college as a full-time SA for at least two semesters or three quarters; and • The SA has satisfied one of the following provisions: • Graduated from the two-year college, or • Completed an average of at least 12-semester or 12-quarter hours of transferable degree credit for each term of full-time enrollment. • Present a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.000.

Division II Two-Year College Transfer Academic Requirements – All Other Qualifiers, Partial Qualifiers, and Nonqualifiers (continued) • Partial qualifiers and nonqualifersshall also present the following minimum hours of transferable credit: • Six-semester or eight-quarter hours of transferable English credit. • Three-semester or four-quarter hours of transferable math credit. • Remedial English and math courses may not be used to satisfy this requirement.
