  1. Solar Systemby: Heidi Keogan, Jennifer DeSimone, and Jessica Busch This presentation will describe the planets in our solar system. It will also describe the sun and its role in the solar system.

  2. Mercury • Mercury has a diameter of 3,032 miles (4,879 km) • Mercury has a hot, thin atmosphere that is made up of atoms blasted off its surface. • Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. • Mercury does not have any moons. • Mercury does not have any rings. • Mercury’s orbit is 88 Earth days. • Mercury is a rocky planet with an iron core.

  3. Venus • Venus has a diameter of 7,522 miles (12,104 km) • Venus’s atmosphere is mainly made up of carbon dioxide (96%) and nitrogen (3%), with small amounts of other gases. Its surface is covered with thick clouds of sulfuric acid. • Venus is the second closest planet to the sun. • Venus does not have any moons. • Venus does not have any rings. • Venus’s orbit is 224.7 Earth days. • Venus has a central iron core and a rocky mantle, similar to the composition of Earth.

  4. Earth • Earth has a diameter of 7,926 miles (12,753 km) • Earth’s atmosphere has many layers and is made up of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. It also has water vapor in its atmosphere. • Earth is the third planet from the sun. • Earth has one moon. • Earth does not have any rings. • Earth’s orbit is 365.25 Earth days. • Earth has a central nickel and iron core and a rocky mantle.

  5. Mars • Mars has a diameter of 4,217 miles (6,785 km) • Mars’s atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide and a smaller amount of nitrogen. • Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. • Mars has two moons. • Mars does not have any rings. • Mars’s orbit is 1.88 Earth years. • Mars is a rocky planet with iron oxide in the soil.

  6. Jupiter • Jupiter has a diameter of 88,736 miles (142,800 km) • Jupiter’s atmosphere is hydrogen and helium. • Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun. • Jupiter has 63 moons. • Jupiter has rings. • Jupiter’s orbit is 12 Earth years. • Jupiter is a planet made of simple gases such as hydrogen and helium, which are liquids under the high pressure environments found in the interiors of the planet

  7. Saturn • Saturn has a diameter of 74,500 miles (119,871 km) • Saturn’s atmosphere includes sulfur. • Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun. • Saturn has 31 moons. • Saturn has rings. • Saturn’s orbit is 29.5 Earth years. • Saturn is a planet made of hydrogen, helium, and small amounts of methane and ammonia, which are liquids under the high pressure environments found in the interiors of the planet

  8. Uranus • Uranus has a diameter of 3,200 miles (51,488 km) • Uranus’s atmosphere is made of hydrogen, helium, and methane. • Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun. • Uranus has 27 moons. • Uranus has one partial ring. • Uranus’s orbit is 84 Earth years. • Uranus is made of methane ice.

  9. Neptune • Neptune has a diameter of 30,760 miles (49,493 km) • Neptune’s atmosphere is made of methane gas. • Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun. • Neptune has 13 moons. • Neptune has rings that are made of rocks and dust. • Neptune’s orbit is 165 Earth years. • Neptune is made of methane ice.

  10. Pluto • Pluto has a diameter of 1,485 miles (2,390 km) • Pluto’s atmosphere is made of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane gas. • Pluto is the ninth planet from the sun. • Pluto has 3 moons. • Pluto has no known rings. • Pluto’s orbit is 248 Earth years. • Pluto is made of ice and rock.

  11. The Sun • The diameter of the sun is 864,400 miles (1,391,000 kilometers) • The sun is made up mostly of hot hydrogen, helium, with a small amount of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. • The sun is 93,000,000 miles from Earth. • The sun is the center of our solar system. All the planets orbit the sun. It provides light and heat to the planets. • The surface of the sun is 10,000 degrees Farenheit.

  12. Fun Planet Facts • The temperature on Mercury ranges from -300 to 800 degrees Fahrenheit • Venus is the brightest object in the sky besides the moon and sun. • Earth has life! • Mars has a volcano named Olympus Mons • Jupiter has a moon that is made of ice • Saturn’s rings are like an ice track • Uranus spins on its side • Neptune has a “great dark spot” • Pluto was stripped of its status as a planet in August 2006
