  1. DNA ReplicationUnit 5 Thomas Jefferson Biology

  2. WARM UP – January 25 objective copy: I can create a model of DNA to show how it replicates, and how mutations can get passed on. do now answer: • Infer the meaning of the term ‘replication’. • Choose the bigger: nucleotide / chromatin • What are some ways that the structure of a DNA molecule is related to its function?

  3. WARM UP – January 25 homework -Study for DNA structure/function quiz- Will be Tues. 1/29 -Make replication flashcards – Due Wed.1/30 -Organize binders!!!! agenda -Cell Cycle Quiz Retake -Reading: The Structure of DNA (book p. 292- 295, q’s 1-6 on p. 295. E.C. Mystery clue question) -Polymeraces!!! objectiveI can list the three basic steps of how DNA replicates

  4. WARM UP – January 18 New Handout = Page 8 objective copy: I can list the three basic steps of how DNA replicates. do now answer: • What is semi-conservative replication? • Use the base-pair rule to show the corresponding nucleotide sequence that would create a DNA molecule: A T T - C G C - T T A - A G G- C C G

  5. WARM UP – January 18 homework -Organize binders!!!! agenda -Pass back/debrief DNA quizzes -Vocab Set #2 - Notes: Steps of Replication - Video: Replication in Action -Book Reading: Ch. 10-1 p. 188-189, Q’s #4 & 6 objectiveI can list the three basic steps of how DNA replicates

  6. Vocab Set #2: Replication How do we make effective flash cards? WORD LIST: Replication Daughter StrandComplementary DNA Polymerase Parent Strand Helicase CHALLENGING WORD LIST (pick 4 for A, pick 6 for Extra Credit) Single-stranded binding proteins Primer Leading Strand Lagging Strand Okazaki fragments Mismatch repair You may use notes or another source for definitions!

  7. Chromosome Review Chromosomes: DNA VERY tightly coiled to make it easier for movement Chromosomesunraveling into Chromatin Nucleotides Gene:Section of DNA that makes one trait (one protein)

  8. DNA Replication: Overview • DNA can make an exact copy of itself! • Occurs every time a cell needs to divide • What is the first thing that would need to happen to replicate this DNA?

  9. How Replication Works 1) The 2 strands of the DNA molecule “unzip” to expose the bases • Replication Fork:Point of separation • Chain separated by the enzyme helicase

  10. How Replication Works 2) The enzyme DNA polymerase binds to separated chains of DNA • DNA Polymerase brings new nucleotides to the “unzipped” DNA • Moves along the exposed DNA and pairs according to base-pair rule(A-T & C-G)

  11. 3) Two new strands twist up • There are now 2 identical DNA molecules • Each is half old (parent strand), half new (daughter strand). • This process is therefore referred to as semi-conservative.

  12. Overview of Replication

  13. Page 8: DNA Replication What does replication mean? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNKWgcFPHqw

  14. WARM UP – January 19 objective copy: I can describe how DNA replication fits into the cell cycle. do now answer: (HINT: p. 8) • What is the function/role of helicase in DNA replication? • What is the function/role of DNA polymerase in replication? • Why is it important that DNA replicate (or makes a copy of itself) before our cells divide?

  15. WARM UP – January 19 homework -Study for DNA replication Baby Quiz – Will be Tuesday 1/23 -Organize binders!!!! -EC: Read book p. 188-189 & answer Q’s #4 and 6 on p. 189 – Due Monday 1/22 agenda -Finish Replication notes/practice -Groups: Cell Cycle Intro
