DNA Replication • DNA is a set of instructions for making proteins • When a cell divides, each new cell needs an entire set of DNA • Therefore, DNA must be copied. • The process of copying DNA is called replication • The process of replication is done by enzymes • Helicase separates the DNA molecule • DNA polymerase attaches free nucleotides and proofreads the molecules

  3. Replication • DNA “unzips” • Both sides becomes templates • DNA polymerase attaches complementary nucleotides to each template • Two identical DNA strands are produced • Each new molecule has one new strand and one original strand
