  1. MESA Air OSMB Meeting September 21, 2011

  2. Primary activities 2010-2011 Exam 5 Exposure modeling Health modeling (primarily planning) Publications Ancillary studies

  3. Timeline

  4. Exam 5 Activities • 257 MESA Air “new recruits” from New York and Los Angeles • Exams nearly identical to main MESA exams • 69 have had E5 visit to date • New participants being recruited to MESA Air from MESA cohort • High tech tests • 72% of CTs completed • 81% of US completed • Addition of epigenetics in Chicago and Los Angeles

  5. Exam 5: Newly consented

  6. Exam 5 Air Questionnaire

  7. Exam 5 CT Scans and Ultrasounds Completed

  8. Epigenetics at NWU and UCLA • Approved ancillary study modification to allow for the collection, processing, and storage of additional blood samples from ~150 participants each in LA and Chicago • Large potential role of epigenetic phenomenon in mediating environmental effects • Participants in these regions (and especially the new recruits in Riverside LA) experience some of the highest and most heterogeneous concentrations of air pollutants in the MESA Air cohort

  9. Modified Epigenetics Protocol • The protocol for these participants will be to use the Type 3 rather than Type 1 blood draw • 4 additional CPT tubes (8 mL each) • 1 additional EDTA tube (2 mL) • Much shorter processing than full epigenetic protocol (4 steps, rather than 23) • Centrifugation of the CPT tubes • Pelleting the PBMCs • Washing the PBMCs • Freezing and shipping small aliquots • Existing consent forms cover the additional blood collection

  10. Exposure modeling progress • Final pragmatic PM2.5 • Likelihood-based NOX and NO2 • Likelihood-based carbon species and elements

  11. Example: NOX in Los Angeles

  12. Example: NOX in Los Angeles

  13. Significant Small-Scale Spatial Resolution

  14. Health modeling planning – thinking about: • Between- and within-city analyses • Acute and chronic exposure timeframe • Primary pollutant selection • Biological mechanisms

  15. Publications progress • 24 papers published from MESA Air • 6 in past year • 41 additional manuscript proposals • 8 in pen draft form • Other published products, including R packages

  16. Van Hee et al. Epidemiology 2011 (epub ahead of print)

  17. Ancillary studies • Significant progress on existing ancillary studies (e.g., Coarse, NPACT) • New ancillary study funding obtained (e.g., CCAR) • Additional projects proposed (e.g., MI classification, dietary effect modification)

  18. Timeline
