  2. What is a Progressive? • Progressives are people who want to make change • from 1900 to the mid 1940s wanted change in factories • Wanted to help women, children, immigrants, and other factory workers being treated harshly

  3. Department of commerce and labor • Helped corporations clean up things that made them look bad like lawsuits • Started in 1903

  4. National Child Labor Commitee • Against oppressive conditions including child labo • Started in 1905

  5. Industrial Workers of the World • Part of Radical Union • For solidarity, strikes against harsh conditions, and if necessary, sabotage and violence All slides about federations continued efforts into twentieth century.

  6. Lawrence Strike of 1912 • Included hundreds of women • Protested a coat factory

  7. Causes • Eighteenth and nineteenth amendment • America went from farming to city society • Trouble with Yankee Protestant that were middle class

  8. Roosevelt Taking Action • Was president during time of Progressives • Extended power of the Executive Branch and government for the help of the economy • Didn’t use laissez-faire attitude • First president to assign the government a direct role to the people

  9. End Results • Females educated in women colleges that were created in the nineteenth century • WTUL and NCL wanted fix male owned garment factories where females were abused THE END 
