  1. LINKScience: Your path to the world of Science

  2. The study of science includes three fields: • Life Sciences • Physical Sciences • Earth Sciences LINKScience Courses

  3. Earth Science Classes • Basic Earth Science • GeoScience Earth Science Classes

  4. Life Science Classes – Core classes • Basic Life Science • Biology-Applied • Biology-Regular • Biology-Differentiated • Biology-Honors (Pre-IB/AP course) • IB Biology- Standard Level Life Science Courses

  5. Physical Science Classes – Core Classes • Basic Physical Science • Physical Science (Physics emphasis) • Chemistry-Applied • Chemistry-Regular • Chemistry-Differentiated/Advanced Placement • IB Chemistry- High Level • Physics-Applied • Physics-Regular • Physics-Differentiated/Advanced Placement • IB Physics- Standard Level Physical Science Classes

  6. Elective Science Classes • Genetics • Zoology • Anatomy & Physiology • Animal Behavior • Botany • Environmental Studies • Advanced Chemistry • Medical Terminology Life Science Courses

  7. Students will be required to pass: • 30 total credits of science, • 5 credits in an earth science, 5 credits in a life science, 5 credits in physical science (physics focus) and 5 credits in physical science (chemistry focus). • Students will need to pass 10 credits of a biology class prior to taking a chemistry class. Class of 2015 Graduation REquirements

  8. Most four year colleges require 3 years of science with at least 2 selected from Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Two classes must include laboratory instruction. All LHS science courses, except for the Basic Science* courses, meet admission requirements for science courses and laboratory instruction. *Students who are planning on post-secondary education should not consider the Basic Science Scope. College admissions requirements

  9. Scopes of Study A Scope of Study is a plan outlining the courses which will prepare each student for their academic goals. The LHS Science department ascribes to four different scopes : • Basic – meeting only LPS graduation requirements • Regular – technical, vocational schools or four-year programs requiring some science. • Differentiated – four-year schools, science-focused programs • International Baccalaureate – students enrolled in the IB program

  10. Basic Scope Students who are interested in earning graduation credits and not planning on any post-secondary education. Careers may include: food service, telemarketing, retail services/sales & labor services Suggested Courses*: Basic GeoScience, Basic Physical Science & Basic Life Science * These courses will not count as prerequisites for most post-secondary programs.

  11. Regular Science Scope Students interested in community college, two-year associate programs or a four-year non-science program. Careers may include: electronics, cosmetology, legal-assistant, mechanics, HVAC, secretary, animal science, education, business, architecture, construction management, arts, communications, etc. Suggested Courses: Physical Science, GeoScience, Biology, Chemistry (Applied), Physics (Applied), Environmental Studies, Zoology, Botany, Animal Behavior, and Genetics.

  12. Differentiated Scope* Students interested in a four year post-secondary education with an emphasis in science, engineering, or medicine. Careers may include: medicine, engineering, sciences: chemist, physicist, meteorologist, biologist, veterinarian, food scientist, forensic scientist, etc. Suggested Courses: Honors Physical Science, Honors Biology or Differentiated Biology, Diff./AP Chemistry, Diff. Physics, Genetics, Anatomy/Physiology, & Advanced Chemistry *Students wishing to take Advanced Placement and/or International Baccalaureate classes will need to register for Honors Physical Science & Honors Biology

  13. International Baccalaureate Scope Student enrolled in the IB program will take: • 9th grade- Honors Physical Science • 10th grade- Honors Biology • IB program* (11th & 12th Grades) • HL Chemistry (2 years), or • SL Biology (1 year), or • SL Physics (1 year) • * Students need to see their counselor about registering for IB courses
