  2. 1. Functions of the Skeletal System • Read page 38 of the blue human body book. Record the five functions on the back of your skeletal system sheet. • Click on picture to check answer

  3. 2. Parts of the Skeletal System • Read pages 40 – 45 of the blue human body textbook. Complete the foldable on the parts of the skeletal system (bone, joint, ligament, cartilage) • Foldable should include a good description of each part! • Check your answers on the following slides. • Glue to the top half of pg 8 in your folder.

  4. Check you Answer • Boneorgan that makes new blood cells, stores calcium and phosphorous

  5. Check you answer • Cartilage  thick layer of tissue at the ends of bones to act as a shock absorber • Found on your nose, ears, knee

  6. Check you answer • Ligaments  band of tissue that holds bones together

  7. Check your answers • Joints anyplace where 2 or more bones meet

  8. 3. What other systems work with the Skeletal System? • Muscular System - bones provide an attachment for muscles so that body can move. • Circulatory System – bones produce red blood • cells for the circulatory system • 3. Digestive/Respiratory – bones provide protection for • the internal organs • 4. Nervous – neurons send message to brain when injury has occurred

  9. 4. Reading Article • Obtain a reading article from your teacher. • Read the article, highlighting the main idea from each paragraph • Glue to page 9 in your folder.

  10. What are the different types of Joints? 1. Go to the following website to see how the different joints work http://www.jeffsims.net/flash/skeleton.html

  11. 5. Where are the joints located at? • Get a diagram of the skeletal system from your teacher. Use page 190 of your textbook • Color the location of the different joints. • Ball/socket ( red) • Immovable (blue) • Pivot (yellow) • Hinge (green) • Gliding (orange)

  12. 6. Functions of the muscular system • Click on the image below and record the main function of the muscular system on your muscle sheet

  13. Parts of the Muscular System • Muscle - is a tissue that can relax, contract, and provide the force needed to move the body. • Tendons - – tissue that attaches muscle to bones

  14. Use your textbook to record a description for each type of muscle on your foldable. Use both textbooks as resources. 7. Type of Muscle Foldable

  15. Click on picture to review types of muscles.

  16. 8. What other systems work with the muscular system? • Skeletal – moves bones so that the body moves • Circulatory – makes the heart pump • Respiratory – regulates breathing rate through the • muscle called the diaphragm • 4. Digestive – helps breaks down food and get rid of solid • wastes • 5. Urinary – helps store and release urine in the bladder • 6. Nervous – brain sends messages that controls muscles

  17. 8. Click on the picture to play the Haunted House Game.

  18. 9. Learning Guide • Answer the following questions on a sheet of notebook paper and turn into your teacher: • Why is the skeletal system important to your life? (Hint: think about its functions) • Why is the muscular system important to your life? (Hint: think about its functions) • How is a bone different from cartilage? • How are tendons and ligaments different from each other? • What is the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles? • What type of joints would be found in your: • Skull/pelvic __________ b.
