  3. Rio Tinto Position on Climate Change • Building support for government action • Developing low emission pathways for our products • Taking a proactive stance at our operations to reduce GHG emissions

Building Support for Practical Government Action Rio Tinto will engage with stakeholders to advocate for domestic and international government policies that: • Encourage leadership from developed economies • Set credible limits • Support technology development and deployment • Utilize broad-based market mechanisms that increase flexibility and reduce abatement cost

  6. Participation in Voluntary California Climate Action Registry • U.S. Borax a charter member of CCAR • RTM President & CEO Gary Goldberg appointed by Speaker of the Assembly, Fabian Nunez, to CCAR Board • Certified Borax data back to 2000

  7. Key Criteria for a Western States Registry • Reporting into multiple initiatives is time consuming and difficult - coordination and streamlining amongst states/governments is needed • Early action needs to bear reward: • with governments and communities, and, • through services via registry such as legislative updates or exporting data to other formats &/or registries

  8. Key Criteria for a Western States Registry • Must have a way to ensure a level playing field • Simple and easy to use database • Internationally recognized protocol • Easy access to assistance from Registry to quickly deal with issues • Build on what already exists

  9. Summary • The larger the region the better • Ensure credit for early action • Ensure international recognition • Level playing field • Don’t reinvent the wheel
