  1. The Values That Define Us Ownership is as Ownership Does

  2. Ownership is as Ownership Does 27Peter answered him, "We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?" 28Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. Matthew 19:16-29 NIV

  3. Ownership is as Ownership Does • Looking religious isn’t ownership. • Being religious isn’t ownership. • Discipleship demands total personal commitment. • Jesus expects people to be all in. • The return on the investment is now and not yet.

  4. Ownership is as Ownership Does 41Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. 43Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything--all she had to live on.” Mark 12:41-44 NIV

  5. Ownership is as Ownership Does • Your economic level doesn’t matter. Jesus expects you to demonstrate ownership through personal sacrificial investment. • Investing in relationships and sharing your life. • Investing financially in the mission of the kingdom that God has called you to be a part of. • Investing your time, energy, and prayer.

  6. Ownership is as Ownership Does 1Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2With his wife's full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles' feet. 3Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God.”

  7. Ownership is as Ownership Does 5When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. 6Then the young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him. 7About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8Peter asked her, "Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?" "Yes," she said, "that is the price." 9Peter said to her, "How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

  8. Ownership is as Ownership Does 10At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events. Acts 5:1-11 NIV

  9. Ownership is as Ownership Does • God knows if someone means business about being a part of his kingdom (1 Cor. 4:5). • As a good father, God either disciplines the individual or he will discipline the church that fails to hold the individual accountable (Heb. 12:5-13). • Shepherds and teachers are held to a stricter standard (James 3:1 and 1 Tim. 3 and Titus 1) • There are consequences for duplicity in feigning ownership.
