  1. Analysis of “Snap Out Of It” by Arctic Monkeys

  2. Song Choice I am in a team with Douglas, Bea and Caitlin. After discussing all of our song shortlists, we collectively decided to develop a music video for the song “All Yours” by Balancing Act (it was my top song) Initial discussion As soon as we made sure everyone is happy with our song choice, we had a discussion about the initial ideas we have for our music video Music video analysis It is important to analyse a similar, already existing product in order to understand how globally known bands attract their consumers through visuals Reflection After analysing the music video by Arctic Monkeys, I will note down what ideas can be applied in our video itself Application Throughout the pre-production, we will try to implement the ideas we picked up from other music videos in order to reach our target audiences and promote the product to the fullest Why is this useful (timeline for the next week)?

  3. Shots: Mid shot + pan of the girl leaving the pool Long over-the-door shot of her walking in the house Close ups on her collarbones Slow motion Rack focus (from the girl’s back to the cup of coffee with a cigarette) Fast cuts from her body to the shadows on the wall Core themes: Male Gaze (Laura Mulvey): the viewers are focused on the body of the girl from the very start Character is introduced as an object of sexual desire Hint to bad mental health/issues through the cigarette shot The girl looks too perfect, the audience is suspicious Theme of voyerism (over-the-door shot, as if the audience are watching her secretly) Key takeaways: Song intro matches the visuals perfectly (“I heard that you fell in love” while we watch the girl put her bra on) The audience is purposefully misled, so that the plot twist/contrast we are about to witness keeps us engaged throughout the whole video Part 1: introducing the character

  4. Shots: Mid shot of the girl’s face Over-the shoulder shots of the TV + rack focus Flashy, fast editing (cuts and glitchy transitions) Push in close up on the steak Montage of the girl going through all stages of grief Core themes: Break up (with the lead singer, as in the over-the-shoulder shot it seems like he is looking at her through the screen) Anger, pain, numbness (turning the steak over on a pan with bare hands) Emotional rollercoaster (starts laughing right after crying) Revealing the truth to the audience: as soon as she sits on the sofa, she starts looking “messy” and goes from a character of sexual desire to a character we sympathse with Key takeaways: The audience realises that the girl broke up with the lead singer and is now rewatching the old videos (the band playing the song itself) = video in video The girl is shown in different light (sxy adn broken), which attracts the audience, because it feels intimate Unconventional (showing pain through the steak shot, for example) Part 2: storyline becomes clear

  5. Shots: Close-up of the girl leaning onto the screen Static mid shot of her standing (alcohol behind) Hand held shots of the video recording Fast paced editing (glitchy between the girl and the band) Core themes: The girl is very clearly getting over the lead singer (close up of her leaning on the screen when his face is in frame) There is alcohol behind her = depression, pain, bad habits, cliche break up She is dancing = seems like she accepted the breakup, but at the end she is back in the pool = cycle (as in the beginning), she is back to pretending everything is fine, while she is still heartbroken Key takeaways: The shot, where the recording is projected on the girl in the dark could be used in our music video as well The idea of finishing the video with a starting shot is also quite unconventional and rounds up the story efficiently The use of props (like alcohol) and looks (messy hair, smudged mascara) communicate the desired ideas Part 3: roundup

  6. Glitchy editing increases the pace and builds up to the climax well • Idea of the video in the video is interesting • “Cycle” = finishing the video the same way it was started • Projection over the face/body • Showing different emotions of the character (from sexy/perfect to broken and messy) • Emphasising the main character giving them the most screen time Conclusion
