  1. StandWeSpeak A 21st-Century Sexual Wellness Platform 6 Myths about Menstruation that we need to set straight

  2. 1."You should not exercise during your periods" Contrary to some popular belief, exercising during your periods actually has a very positive effect. If you experience mood swings and fatigue in the days leading up to your periods, regular aerobic exercise may help lessen these symptoms. Exercising can give you an endorphin high, which helps in elevating your mood. Endorphins are also natural painkillers that can help with painful periods.

  3. 2. "Never have sex during your periods " The only big downside of having sex during your periods is the mess. Blood can get on you, your partner, your sheets . But that doesn't mean you can't have sex during your periods. Infact, an orgasm can help with period cramps . Sex can make your periods shorter as muscle contractions during an orgasm push out uterine contents faster.

  4. 3. "You cannot get pregnant on your period " The odds of getting pregnant during your period are considerably lower, but it's still possible. You are most likely to get pregnant during ovulation, which takes place about 14 days before your periods. Your cycle might be different from others who menstruate and your cycle length can also change monthly. If you have a shorter menstrual cycle, your chances of getting pregnant are higher .

  5. 4."All people who menstruate experience PMS" This myth comes from the popular misconception that any symptom that occurs before or during a period is directly related to PMS. Premenstrual Syndrome is a medical diagnosis of multiple symptoms including emotional and physical discomfort that individuals might experience just before their menstrual cycle. While some people might experience premenstrual symptoms of low to moderate intensity , if they don't have a significant negative effect (as in unbearable pain and/ or emotional instability) on aperson's life it is not medically considered as PMS.

  6. 5. "Don't wash your hair or take a bath during your periods " False. In many places, it is believed that bathing during your periods can cause infertility. However, there is no scientific evidence supporting that. You can definitely have a bath and wash your hair during your periods. In fact, a nice warm bath can help with period cramps and tension.

  7. 6. "Tampons will take away your virginity " Another ridiculous myth that stems from viewing sex as taboo, is the superstition that virgins shouldn't use tampons. While ‘virginity’ itself is a social construct, the problem is the fear of "tearing" or “breaking the hymen. Many people believe that an intact hymen means that the woman hasn't had sex. This is false. The hymen can tear while doing several things like cycling, horse riding etc. Anyone can wear a tampon, virgin or not.

  8. Here are some untrue superstitions about menstruation that originated from India and are still deep-seated in the minds of many: A menstruating person shouldn't be touched as they are impure during that time. You shouldn't enter the kitchen as your periods will spoil the food. Any contact with a man can get you pregnant. Even shaking hands, brushing shoulders etc. A menstruating person shouldn't enter any place of worship. Some menstruating women are not allowed to sleep in the same beds as their husbands or water the plants. The utensils of a menstruating person are not to be mixed with those of the rest of the family. Such superstitions do nothing but oppress people. For people who menstruate, these beliefs can impact their emotional state, mentality, lifestyle and most importantly, their overall health
