Definitions First aid • The emergency care given to an injured or suddenly ill person using readily available materials First aider • Someone who takes charge of an emergency scene and gives first aid Medical help • Care given by a health care professional, or under the supervision of a medical doctor

  3. Definitions Casualty • the individual who is injured or becomes suddenly ill Ages • Adult – over the age of 8 • Child – between 1 and 8 years of age • Infant – under the age of 1 year

  4. Objectives • Preserve Life • Prevent Further Injury • Promote Recovery

  5. Why do people hesitate to help? • Fear of a lawsuit • Fear of contracting a disease • Fear of making things worse

  6. Legal and Regulatory Issues Good Samaritan Principles • No legal duty to respond (except in Quebec) • Identify yourself and get consent • Use reasonable skill and care • You are not negligent • Do not abandon the casualty

  7. Infections Prevent infection • Hand washing • Minimizing mouth to mouth contact • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) • Take care when handling sharp objects Maintain immunizations • Tetanus • Hepatitis
