Human development index: 0.553 Life expectancy at birth: 59.1 Adult literacy rate: 57.9 Combined Gross enrolment ratio: 50.7 GDP per capita: 2,480 Public expenditure on education: 4.4% of GDP Poverty in Ghana at the district level, 2000 Gender-related human development indices Gender-related development index: 117 (value: 0.549) Adult literacy for females: 49.8% (males: 66.4%) Primary/Second/Tert. Enrolment - Females: 48% (males: 53%) PPP/Earned income for females: 2,056 (males: 2,893) Ashanti is born in her family’s hut Her mother died a few hours after delivery, the traditional midwife couldn't stop the hemorrhaging Ashanti is underweight, born below 2 kg Only 25% of population consult a doctor MMR = 200 U5 MR: 111 21% of boys, 41% of girls never went to school 38%M, 64% W are illiterate. The school. A big hut, with no equipment and no running water. Before the end of the year she was subject to circumcision ceremony like other girls in the village FGM prevalence: 77% in the North. Ashanti leaves school and start working in the field to help her family. The owner of the field (50 years) liked her, and tell her father that he wants to marry her. 2.5 M children (40%) aged 5-17 years are working Ashanti reaches puberty. Poverty is unbearable. She cannot imagine herself wife of the owner of the land She decided to run away to the south, to Accra as many of the girls did before her. 23% of working children are Kayayee 41% of working girls, 12% of boys. Total group age 5- 17 years: 6.4 M Working in hazardous work: 1.4 M Under 13 years: 1 M Out of working children: Domestic servitude 1% of boys, 14% of girls Commercial sex workers: 0.2% of boys, 7% of girls Asahni’s father calls her back home because he is ill. Actually, her elder brother has stolen 2 cows from the next village, and her family decided to give her as trokosi to the other tribe. Trokosi, tribal servude for life: 4700 cases recorded. Ashanti lives 40 years as trokosi without any rights. She had 3 children, 2 boys and 1 girl. at 55 years, an accident happened and the son of the chief of the tribe dies form fever. They accused her of witchcraft and send her with her 6 years daughter to the witches camp The Proposed Advocacy Strategy To be developed into an action/implementation plan
