  1. Man has been influencing his surroundings from the very beginning. • Knowingly or unknowingly, he damages the earth’s environment everyday. • Everyday, the pollution in the earth’s atmosphere, oceans, water bodies, soil etc., is increasing. • Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems that man is facing today. • Hence, we need to take care to save our Mother Earth from the dangers of Environmental Pollution. • Even small steps taken at personal and community levels can help check this problem to a great extent.

  2. The Story begins with the index of purity of earth. It presents the evidence how increase in pollution is affecting the purity index

  3. There are various types of pollutions like Air Pollution, Water Pollution, Soil Pollution, Marine Pollution and Solid Wastes.

  4. The main factors increasing air pollution are automobile exhausts, industrial smokes. Economic growth causes industrial bloom which in turn increases air pollution. Increase in population increases the number of automobiles which again increases the air pollution

  5. Industrial effluents which include harmful chemicals are dumped into rivers and lakes. This causes pollution of water. Increase in industries is due to economic growth. Population growth further increases the problem as more and more rubbish is added to rivers.

  6. Soil Pollution is mainly due to excessive use of insecticides and pesticides. It increases the acidity in the soil and renders it useless for agriculture.

  7. Industries dump their solid wastes like aluminum cans and plastic products in open. As the population increases the amount of waste dumped by people also increases. Hospitals also play a major role by dumping medicine wrappers.

  8. Marine Pollution is caused mainly due to Spilling of Oil from ships and dumping of nuclear wastes into oceans.

  9. This graph shows decrease in purity index with time. Least value is 0.63

  10. Steps to check Pollution

  11. Trees should be planted to check air pollution. Use of fossil fuels should be discouraged. Lesser use of private vehicles and use of unleaded petrol should be encouraged.

  12. The harmful effect of chemicals from industries should be nullified before dumping into rivers and that dumping also should be decreased.

  13. Alternatives to pesticides and insecticides should be used such as beneficial insects, crop rotation, residue destruction, varietal resistance, proper planting dates to reduce soil pollution. .

  14. We should encourage the use of biodegradable products. Recycled products should be preferred. The dumping of solid wastes from industries and hospitals etc., should be minimized.

  15. The Rate of dumping of Nuclear waste should be decreased.

  16. This graph shows decrease in purity index with time after considering the factors discussed before. Least value is 0.74.
