  1. Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults in Newham Progress since the CSCI Inspection Gareth Williams

  2. The Headlines • Significant improvements to safeguarding work and its recording – improvement more noticeable since May • Good evidence of partnership developments, especially with Police, NUHT, ELFT • Strong political and managerial leadership and commitment to improve • Policies and procedures “fit for purpose” • Public information – written and electronic – improving • Good training strategy and developing performance management • Safeguarding Team highly praised • Now at least Adequate/Promising

  3. But ....... • Board needs to be more independent of Council • Independent Chair • Board “branding” • Separation of functions • Governance arrangements • Need to prove that improvements can be sustained • Further general public information is needed, and should be ‘themed’ across the partnership • Partnership needs some development, particularly to bring service providers further on board • Before we can call it GOOD

  4. What will we do? • Safeguarding Board this afternoon will consider report and decide on some changes • Discussion on way forward for the Board and the Partnership • Formal reports to Executive Director, Cabinet Member and Newham Partnership Board • Ensure progress is monitored and sustained • Some additional resources have been allocated for additional capacity – more will be created to allow Safeguarding Managers to concentrate on development of partnership • Maintain and improve robust quality monitoring of safeguarding cases and recording

  5. And Finally .......... • Let’s think about how we develop the partnership • What do you want the partnership to do for you, your organisation and those it supports? • What are you and your organisation willing to commit to the partnership to make sure it’s as effective as possible?
