What is Psoriasis? It is an autoimmune disease wherein the immune system of a person instead of attacking the external pathogens starts to attack the healthy cells. The disease is found commonly among adults and has heredity and the environment as the causative factors. In fact, there are a number of triggers that can cause the Psoriasis condition to worsen such as an infection, stress, cold weather, dry skin, certain types of vaccination, beta blockers to treat hypertension, lithium to treat mental disorders, smoking, alcohol, and a gluten rich food.

How can Psoriasis affect the feet? The disease can cause pink or red plaques accompanied by a thin layer of white scale on the top of the foot. However, at the sites of pressure such as the plantar or bottom of the foot, Psoriasis can cause calluses (thickened skin) and fissures. Also, the disease can cause nail dystrophy, that is, discolouration, shifting of the nail plate from the nail bed, thickening, and the nail turning brittle. How can a Podiatrist be of help in managing Psoriasis? Being associated with conditions of the lower extremities such as the feet, ankle, and knees, a Podiatrist is often the first person to diagnose the disease. Although the diseases cannot be cured there are lines of treatment to limit its spread or manage its manifestations. The Podiatry services at Mandurah are geared towards treating the secondary complications arising out of Psoriasis and Eczema. These include cutting off the dystrophic nails, calluses and fissures.
