  1. Reactive Dyes By Meghmani

  2. Basic Things about Reactive Dyes Reactive dyes are mainly used for dyeing cellulose fibres such as cotton and viscose, but they are also increasingly gaining importance for wool and polyamide. The range of available reactive dyes is wide and enables a large number of dyeing techniques to be used.

  3. Uses of Reactive Dyes In dyeing cellulose fibres with reactive dyes the following chemicals and auxiliaries are used: • Alkali (sodium carbonate, bicarbonate and caustic soda) • Salt (mainly sodium chloride and sulphate) • Urea may be added to the padding liquor in continuous processes • Sodium silicate may be added in the cold pad-batch method.

  4. Reactive Dyes by Functional Group

  5. Classification of Reactive Dyes On the Basis of Reactive Group: 1. Halogen Derivatives - Triazine Group - Pyridimine Group - Quinoxaline Group 2. Activated Vinyl Compound On the Basis of Temperature: 1. Hot Brand 2. Cold Brand On the Basis of Reactivity: 1. Highly Reactive 2. Moderate Reactive 3. Lower Reactive

  6. Characteristics of Reactive Group of Reactive Dye * Reactive Groups do not contribute to the color of dye. Chromogen group imparts it. * The reactivity of vinyl sulphone group is less than that of halogen group. * If number of reactive group increases, binding also increases. * Reactive dye absorb up to 90%. * If the molecular weight of reactive group increases, reactivity increases. * Chlorine imparts medium reactivity, but it is cheap. * Reactivity of fluorine is the lease and its rate hydrolysis is also less. * Reactivity of vinyl sulphone group increases with increasing temperature and pH. * Sulphone group has more solubility but it is not stable. * Generally low molecular weight dyes are of hot brand. * Less affinity dyes are used for pad method.

  7. Different Methods of Reactive Dye Application 1. Pad-Batch Method. 2. Pad-Batch Processes are of two types: - Pad (alkali) batch (cold) process. - Pad (alkali) batch (warm or hot) process. 3. Pad dry Method. 4. Pad Steam Method.

  8. Properties of Reactive Dyes 1. Reactive Dye is anionic in nature. 2. Reactive Dye is a water soluble dye. 3. They have better wash and light fastness properties. 4. They have better substantivity. 5. They form strong co-valent bond with the cellulosic fiber. 6. Alkaline condition is must required for dyeing. 7. Electrolyte is must for exhaustion of dyes in the fiber. 8. A certain amount of dyes are hydrolyzed during application. 9. Wide range of color can be produces during application. 10. Comparatively cheap is price.
