    4. Where is Ibadan?

    6. The Dominican Institute presently has: The Department of Philosophy started in 1994 awarding a B.A. in affiliation with the University of Ibadan.

    7. The Department of Theology started in 1997, leading to a B.Th. from the University of St. Thomas Aquinas, Rome (Angelicum) and an M.A. from Duquesne University (Pittsburgh).

    8. The Michael Dempsey Centre for Religious and Social Research which started in 2002 and offers research facilities, seminars and conferences for visiting scholars.

    9. The Library with over 100,000 volumes, as well as electronic journals and books - easily the best philosophical and theological library in Nigeria. It excels in other fields as well.

    10. The Centre provides spiritual formation for: Those preparing for the ministry of formation in religious institutes and/or seminaries. Those preparing for final profession of vows. Those involved in lay apostolates.  

    11. 24 hr. high-speed internet access through direct satellite connection, providing connection to the Dominican Institute and hundreds of institutional and private clients in the city.

    12. The Center for Information and Communication Technology (CICOT) started in 2003. It conducts training courses in hardware maintenance, data management, internet connectivity, website construction and hosting. One of CICOT’s recent research achievements is the manufacture of the 2.4GHz Internet antenna by a team of CICOT information technology experts.

    13. The Institute is a partner in the West African Bioethics Training Program of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, in association with the Fogarty International Center, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and the National Human Geonome Institute, at National Institutes of Health, Bethesda. www.westafricanbioethics.net.

    14. A monthly public lecture at which issues that affect the Church and various sectors of the Nigerian society are discussed, and which continues to attract members of the academic community of the University of Ibadan and other tertiary institutions in and around Ibadan.

    21. Catholic education is based on two premises: The first is that faith and science, religion and secular thought are not antithetical, but autonomous and complementary. The second premise is the unity of the human family under God and the command to love all people.

    23. Therefore, start a Dominican University! In continuity with the original mission of Dominicans to Nigeria to provide higher Catholic education for the laity, the Dominican Institute already does what universities do—research and teaching—this in keeping with the Order’s tradition since its inception in 1216. The National Universities Commission has opted for private universities as the way both to improve quality and provide opportunity for the huge number of would-be students that the Government universities cannot admit. Contacts with the National Universities Commission have been most encouraging. Numerous sectarian and Islamic private universities have been or are about to be established in Nigeria. These are a concern to Catholic parents who would prefer an educational environment more conducive to their children’s Faith.

You have my full support and backing for this Dominican University Project. I ask God to bless you and fructify the Project as I assure you also of my continued prayers for its success.

    27. From Francis Cardinal Arinze It is no surprise that the Dominican Province in Nigeria is planning to expand the Dominican Institute in Ibadan into a Dominican University. Nigeria needs universities inspired by the Catholic faith in order to give of the best that the Church can offer to Nigerian citizens. The Dominicans can help in this.

Consequently, we cannot be left out of the race to provide quality higher education to the teeming population of young Nigerians It follows that the move by the Dominican Authorities in Nigeria to set up a university has my blessing.
