  1. What is the Best Treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder? Individuals with OCD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, often feel held back. They have a great deal of anxiety when things aren’t in order. The level of OCD they have can influence how much it adversely affects them day to day. For some, it is so severe that they barely have any interactions with others. There are treatment options to help regain control over it. In order to find the best treatment, a person has to be evaluated. Their triggers need to be searched for. The severity of the situation for them needs to be addressed. Finding a customised treatment plan for them that takes their needs and the issues they have with this diagnosis into consideration is very important. Support Most individuals with OCD know they have it to an extent. Yet they may not fully understand how it influences their thought process. A complete diagnosis can help them to have that information to work from. It is encouraged to seek counselling as the professional support and information can be very valuable. Too often, those with OCD feel isolated. Others may make fun of them for some of their behaviours relating to it. While they do so in fun, they don’t understand they are harming the self-esteem of that person. Many people with this diagnosis try to hide it and that makes it very difficult for them to interact with others.

  2. Part of the treatment plan should be to embrace and accept the diagnosis. The patient should ask questions and share any frustrations or other feelings they have relating to it. This will give them the courage they need to share the diagnosis with others. Talking about OCD and how it affects them can help those they love or those they work with to understand it and offer support. Group therapy can be a useful part of the treatment too. Being in a setting with peers who understand what it is like to cope with obsessive compulsive disorder behaviours can be a weight off their shoulders. It helps them understand they aren’t alone and there are ways to change the outcome. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy The most successful form of treatment for this diagnosis is CBT, or cognitive behaviour therapy. This involves taking the current actions of the persona and finding new behaviours to replace them with. These new behaviours will assist them with reducing anxiety, regaining control, and being able to function around others. It can be very stressful in the beginning because changes is often hard to embrace for someone with OCD. However, they must be willing to try the new methods and to discuss with their therapist how they feel afterwards. It can be a process of two steps forward and three steps back. It will take a great deal of time to replace harmful behaviours with better ones. Seeing small but significant improvements though is very encouraging to someone with OCD. They tend to have an unrealistic fear or germs or other concerns. Being able to break down those barriers allows them to think less about such scenarios. They are then able to focus their time and attention on work, relationships, and hobbies. The length of time someone needs to be in therapy will depend on the severity of their diagnosis and their willingness to try new things. Exercise Keeping the mind and body calm is key to treating OCD. Finding an exercise routine the patient really loves is encouraging. The daily exercise will reduce

  3. stress, further calming the mind and the body. It can be a way to boost mood and to break those repetitive behaviours. Mixing up the workouts can also help someone to find the most value in them as part of this treatment plan.
