  3. A Comparison of Learning Conditions http://faculty.coehd.utsa.edu/pmcgee/nlii/CMS_V2.htm

  4. Technology & Brain-Based Learning

  5. Why Brain-Based Learning Matters There are connections between learning and 1) our connections with emotions and memories, 2) relationships to real-life experiences, and 3) activation of both the auditory and visual areas of the brain to create meaning. Which means-->Need to use teaching strategies that encourage the brain to make associations and “create synaptic connections and anchor learning through contextual experience.

  6. Why Is Technology Integration Even Necessary?? The Top 5 Reasons!! 5. Technology provides motivation for students4. Technology offers unique instructional capabilities3. Technology increases teacher productivity2. Technology gives support for new instructional approaches, such as: *Cooperative learning *Shared intelligence *Problem solving and higher level skills

  7. 1.Technology skills are required for an information age. Roblyer, M. D. (2003). Integrating educational technology into teaching (3rd ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Education, Inc./Merrill Prentice Hall.

  8. How Do We Form a “Bridge” To Connect the Student and the Teacher? By creating a learning environment that incorporates systematic technology integration planning.

  9. It’s All About The Planning!! The Classroom Technology Planning Sheet Covers: Where You Are Where You Want to Be Immediate Action(s) Action Items Roles/Responsibilities Actions Needed to Move Forward

  10. Benefits of Systematic Planning Will provide a “roadmap” regarding how you have decided to approach the tasks. Outlines where you are, where you wish to be, and how you plan to get there. Provides an approach that’s not just “throw a dart---and hope it sticks”. Allows you to learn from your challenges and make improvements for the following year.

  11. Where Do I Begin?? Review the tools that you already have in your toolkit and evaluate what your campus/district has plans to purchase or will purchase. Technology resources, hardware, software, even people!

  12. My Campus/District Is Financially “Challenged”.... How Do I Obtain Resources?? Grant Writing!!!

  13. Sample Grant Sources!! Grant Wrangler The Cisco Foundation eInstruction Computers for Learning HP Technology Grants for Teaching Digital Wish The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

  14. Where You Want To Be... Think about your vision for your students regarding technology. How do you envision students using technology in your classroom? What are the tech skills that you want students in your classroom to attain?

  15. Where You Want To Be... Most importantly--- How will reaching the technology goals that you’ve set for your students impact their learning? How will you assess whether or not the goals were reached?

  16. Where You Want To Be... How will you achieve these goals?? We’re glad that you asked...we have a few suggestions!

  17. Word processing software Spreadsheet software Database software Presentation graphics software Instructional software Web 2.0 Tools Application Software...

  19. Hardware/Peripheral Devices • Digital cameras • SMARTBoards/SMART Airlines • eInstruction Clickers • Scanners • Document cameras • Video conferencing equipment

  20. “Many types of traditional learning activities can be extended to incorporate technology integration.” Learning Activities

  21. Criteria that can be used in the selection of technology-based learning activities: • Plan authentic activities • Promote self-directed learners • Go beyond one subject area • Use multiple approaches • Go beyond retelling ( Facilitate H-O-T-S) • Keep it simple • Borrow activity ideas from others • Touch imagination • Engage the learner • Build activities around current events • Facilitate spontaneity and discovery • Plan for open-ended inquiry Cunningham, C. A. & Billingsley, M. (2003). Curriculum webs: A practical guide to weaving the web into teaching and learning. Boston, MA: Pearson Education, Inc.

  22. Nice...But I Need More Concrete Ideas!!

  23. Word Processing Software Activities • Why They Work- • Allows users to create and manipulate text • documents. • A widely used type of software. • Permits users to insert images and, in some cases, video and audio clips. • Can be used for any type of written activity.

  24. Practical Ideas for Using: • Type and format reports • Create newsletters (individual or group project) • Type spelling words and use spell check • Insert photos and graphic images into text • Categorize information • Add links to Internet sites to reports • Organize class notes • Create flow charts • Make labels • Make posters • Make invitations

  25. More Word Processing Software Ideas!! • Make signs • Make charts • Read files written by others and/or add comments • Highlight important information • Create student journals • Create calendars • Type and format book reviews • Create brochures • Create materials to use on bulletin boards • Make checklists • Type and format information for comparison activities

  26. Even More Word Processing Software Ideas... • Keep on-going diaries • Type and format editorials • Type and format news articles • Create guest lists • Create how-to manuals • Create rank-ordered lists • Type and format recommendations • Type and format essays • Type and format responses to questions • Type and format solutions to problems

  27. We’ve Got Even More!! • Type and format travel journals or logs • Type and format travel plans • Create information sheets • Create programs for school activities • Keep on-going logs of classroom activities • Type and format menus • Type and format narrations • Type and format outlines • Create pie charts • Type and format scripts for plays • Use the mail merge feature to print letters to people on address lists

  28. Web 2.0 Tools • Why they work – • Highly engaging, social, web-based tools which allow users to manipulate and interact with content in new ways. • Less expensive than traditional software and many are even free!
