Interphase

  • Interphase first replicates chromosomes into two identical sets

Multimedia Presentations

Slide26 l.jpg

Back

Prophase

  • DNA forms chromosomes, nucleus dissolves, spindles form. Every set of chromatids attach with their homologue to form tetrads. This connection is called synapsis, in which similar chromosomes (homologues) wrap around each other and may exchange pieces. This is called crossing over and results in new gene combinations on chromosomes that will produce genetically unique gametes. This random "shuffle" of genes ensures that the new zygote formed in fertilization will be genetically different from its parents.

Slide27 l.jpg

Metaphase

  • The tetrads are moved by spindle fibers to the equator of the cell
