Task 6 - Choose a musical genre/genres to feature in your magazine. List below the names of bands/artists that are part of this genre, a brief history of the genre and the type of imagery associated with it.
My Research into the Rock/Punk genre: • Rock was developed during and after the 1960’s in which it became a very popular type of music and still is currently particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. It was first based on 1940’s and 1950’s Rock and Roll but also has influences from rhythm & blues and country music. Rock also relies on other genres including blues and folk and incorporated influences from jazz and classical music. • By the late 1960’s a number of distinct rock music sub-genres had appeared which included hybrids like blues rock, folk rock, country rock, and jazz-rock fusion. This then contributed to the development of psychedelic rock influenced by the counter-cultural psychedelic scene. New genres that then emerged from this scene included progressive rock, glam rock, and the diverse and enduring major sub-genre of heavy metal, which emphasized volume, power and speed. In the second half of the 1970s, punk rock both intensified some of these trends to produce a raw, energetic form of music. Punk was an influence into the 1980’s on the development of other sub-genres, including New Wave, post-punk and eventually the alternative rock movement. From the 1990’s onwards, alternative rock began to dominate rock music and break through into the mainstream in the form of grunge, Britpop, and indie rock. Further sub-genres have since emerged, including pop punk, rap rock, and rap metal, as well as attempts to revisit rock's history, including the garage rock/post-punk and synthpop revivals. • Musically, rock has centered around the electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group including bass guitar and drums. Typically, rock is song-based music with a 4/4 beat utilizing a verse-chorus form, but the genre has become widened and so the common musical characteristics of Rock are difficult to define. Like pop music, the lyrics associated with Rock often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political in emphasis. Classically, a rock band takes the form of a quartet whose members cover one or more roles, including vocalist, lead guitarist, rhythm guitarist, bass guitarist, drummer and occasionally a keyboard player or other instrumentalist. • Rock is generally dominated by white, male musicians and has been seen as one of the key factors shaping the themes explored in rock music. Rock places a higher degree of emphasis on music, live performance, and of authenticity than pop music.
Rock artists – (these are mainly images of Rock bands as that is generally what I am basing my magazine on and what my target audience may prefer). (Above) This is an image of the band Boys Like Girls who are an American Rock/Punk band and are an important part of alternative rock. They are wearing dark clothing and so this connotes Rock. They also have almost angered facial expressions and are quite serious which is again associated with many Rock artists.

Also in this image they are holding electric guitars and have a bass and drums pictured with them which is the general instruments associated/used in a rock band.

The covers show: • That the masthead is mainly behind the image and either white on a black background or black on a white background depending on which way it is most visible. • That there is always a medium close up of either a band (as that is most likely on a Rock magazine) or a solo Rock artist or just one member from a band (as shown by 30 Seconds To Mars & Paramore’s lead members). The main image dominates the page to suit the target audience and shows a varied gender (e.g. they can be male or female in a Rock magazine/genre). Also the person/people on the cover always appear very direct as if staring at you to make you focus on them/ drawn in. • There is always a plain background in order for the dominant image to stand out. • Other images and cover lines are placed mainly to the left of the page or at the bottom of the page to allow the main image to be the focus. • All of the artists (both male and female) have quite serious facial expressions which is associated with the genre of Rock as it portrays rebellion which is also strongly associated with Rock. They are all wearing similar coloured clothing to the colours used on the front cover. Also their unusual hair colours and similar style expresses a wild emotion to show they are daring to be different. • However, whilst the male artists appear quite stubborn/stiff by their body language, the female artist appears to be quite seductive as she is using gentler body language, perhaps to show her femininity. Therefore, all artists not only appeal to fellow Rock fans but to the opposite sex as well which may attract them further. • Finally, the colours used are always very bold, bright and eye catching to draw attention and represent the loud atmosphere of Rock.
Types of content in a Rock/Punk magazine – Kerrang! A main image with smaller images – this suggests an image lead page to attract the target audience. Articles & famous rock artists – an insight into who/what will be in the main body of the magazine (to entice the target audience to read on, especially if the artists being featured are well known). Gig Guide – a guide to the latest gigs of famous rock artists. The K! Quiz – a fun Kerrang! quiz completed by readers’ favourite Rock artists. Feedback – feedback on letters sent in from readers and more. Albums – reviews and info on the latest albums of famous rock artists. News – latest news about peoples favourite Rock bands and tours etc Live Reviews – reviews of live gigs of famous Rock artists. Features – Rock artists that are featuring/being interviewed in this issue. Win! – a chance to win tickets for tours.
Imagery associated with Rock/Punk: • Excited/thrilling facial expressions to create the loud atmosphere that relates to rock. • Stern/direct facial expressions also to attract attention and relate to the rebellion feeling of the rock genre. • The artists on the covers are young-ish and so imagery created by rock is also youth not just because of this but also because it is mainly youth interested in rock.
