  1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues? Elizabeth Taylor

  2. Genreconventions • Genre conventions are story elements, they include things such as • Archetypes • Key events • Setting • Building enigma

  3. Genres for our opening sequence

  4. 1. Hot fuzz Comparing my opening sequence to…

  5. 2. Sherlock

  6. 3. Stranger Things

  7. 4. Breaking Bad

  8. Our opening scene CAMERA • We have used a low angle shot throughout most of our opening sequence which can also be seen with Hot fuzz through the two shot. The low angle shot portrays the policemen as having authority. However, in our opening sequence the policeman in the background has more authority as he's higher up likewise with the policeman in the foreground in Hot Fuzz has more authority and status. Hot fuzz

  9. Our opening sequence CAMERA The use of the dual shot implies the sense of partnership and working together as a team. Through the camera shots of our opening scene we see this idea of the policeman higher up being smarter while the policeman lower down is the more funny but not as smart one. This can be compared to breaking bad as the guy higher up in the shot is smarter than the one lower down. Both the smart ones in both clips are wearing glasses which is a connotation of intelligence. We see Levi Strauss’s Binary opposition here through smart and dumb police men. Breaking bad The guy who is lower down that the man with glasses.

  10. Our opening sequence MISE EN SCENE The use of the policeman costumes reinforces their character of working in the police force. They have glasses and coffee cups which reinforces the stereotype of policemen in that genre. Hot fuzz Sherlock

  11. My opening sequence EDITING In our opening scene we used a lot of quick cuts which present a quicker pace narrative adding to the suspense of the movie. Stranger things Hot fuzz

  12. Opening sequence EDITING Stranger things build enigma which is Roland Barthes theory of enigma codes. The opening clip of the series builds tension making the viewer want to carry on watching Stranger things

  13. SOUND Our opening sequence There is no background music in all of the clips. The sound of outside life such as wind and flies can be heard but the dialogue is the most prevailing noise which makes the audience pay more attention into what they have got to say. The idea of comedy can also be seen in the clips of Hot Fuzz and our opening sequence through how the policemen are acting. Breaking bad Hot fuzz

  14. Narrative Our narrative is vert straight forward. It consists of two policemen finding a creature/ object which the viewer is unaware of as we do not see what they are looking at. The dialogue builds the scene up causing an element of mystery and tension until we get a crane shot / establishing shot of where they are and how it is in the middle of no where.

  15. Titles • Our opening title compared with another movie called intoxicated. Both titles are in full caps which give off the same vibe. We put our title at the end of the opening sequence, therefore it does not follow institutional conventions of the form. However, it is typical of crime movies to place their titles at the end of the opening sequence after the initial action.

  16. What we have challenged and why Our opening sequence Stranger things We challenge the fact that we did it during daytime which subverts stereotypes of crime and thriller movies as normally they are filmed during nighttime adding to the suspense and thrill of the movie. For example, with the TV series Stranger Things the first episode is filmed during the night which adds to the suspense of the movie.

  17. What social groups / issues are presented Issues Social Groups , age gender

  18. End of watch Sherlock SOCIAL GROUPS GENDER, AGE, ETHNICITY Our opening sequence included two middle aged white men working together which relates to the stereotype of men in the police force. There are several movies and tv shows such as Sherlock and End of Watch which also present the similar representations

  19. SOCIAL GROUPS - GENDER Mise en scene – they are dressed in conventional black clothing which is stereotypical of men in the police force. presenting their gender. There is binary opposition between these two men as one is the smarter and the other is the dumber. Sound – the gender is portrayed through their dialogue which is masculine as they are trying to one up each other.

  20. SOCIAL GROUPS - AGE • Sound – through their dialogue there is a sense of competition such as ‘I've never seen anything like this before’ and the cop of lower status replying with ‘I have.’ it is stereotypical of middle-aged men trying compete with one another. • Editing – the short cuts during their conversation highlighting the competitive dialogue which further connotes their age (Fiske)

  21. SOCIAL GROUPS - ETHNICITY • Camera – the use of the close - up shots portrays the ethnicity of the two policemen as being stereotypical in a crime movie. It is a stereotype of there being white men in the police force. In other movies such as hot fuzz we see the use of two white men and in Sherlock the two main detectives are white as well.

  22. ISSUES – THE UKNOWN Camera – the only focus is on the the two policemen therefore not showing us what the thing they are looking at is. The crane shot also implies how they are in the middle of no where brining a sense of horror to it. This is a countertype as normally we expect to see what the mystery object is. Sound – through their dialogue we see that they don’t reveal what they are looking at.
