  1. IT Staff Augmentation vs. Managed Services As a company grows in size, it becomes quite apparent that its IT department might need to outsource some of its work in order to maintain efficiency. IT outsourcing can be handled in two ways: staff augmentation or a managed services approach. But how do those two ways differ?

  2. IT Staff Augmentation vs. Managed Services IT Staff Augmentation Services IT Managed Services By employing IT staff augmentation services, a company, with the help of thorough assessment by consultancy services, brings in qualified individuals to work with its in-house staff. IT managed services is your traditional outsourcing approach, with a third party providing the required tech support to a company. Since these qualified individuals are hired and become part of the organization, they can be easily trusted to be more flexible and reliable in their work. Following a traditional outsourcing approach, a company hands over the project or part of the project to the third party, generally without much concern over ‘how will they get it done.’ So, reliability might not come as easily in this approach. In this model, the augmented staff works with the full-time staff on the same projects, making it difficult for an IT manager to quantify the billable-work. The outsourcing provider keeps a track of its part of the project, therefore making its accountability clear. In this approach it is easy for a company to keep or terminate augmented resources. In some cases with long-term augmentation, an IT manager could get more augmented members for a task that could be easily done by the company's staff, with a negative effect on resource allocation and management. With IT managed services, a company expects a defined outcome within a defined time period. Resource allocation by the third party is also done with the project needs and deadline in mind. This model makes it easy for a company to know how it will be billed. With the augmented staff becoming an integral part of the system at any firm, it’s difficult to keep track of all the information that has been shared over the project timeline — and it’s even more difficult to retrieve that information on project completion. The knowledge shared by the company with the third-party IT service provider is not only documented, but also returned when the project is completed.
