  1. "DO NOT BE AFRAID..." the first Christmas Greeting (Luke 2:10) It was a time of terror, inflicted on a country by its own fellow citizens. Violence and death reached a level never seen before - or since - in the nation's history. As this particularly bloody "un-civil" war ravaged the American people, a prominent poet penned words of honesty and hope based on Chrismas faith. Now, in these days of disparities and distrust . . .

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day Henry Wadsworth Longfellow I heard the bells on Christmas day Their old familiar carols play, And wild and sweet the words repeat Of peace on earth, good will to men. I thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along th’unbroken song Of peace on earth, good will to men. And in despair I bowed my head: “There is no peace on earth,” I said, “For hate is strong, and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men.” Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: “God is not dead, nor doth he sleep; The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, With peace on earth, good will to men.” Till, ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, a chant sublime, Of peace on earth goodwill to men. We pray that each time you hear the voices, chimes, chants and bells of Christmastide you will be reminded of God's Good News and the ultimate power of love over hate, good over evil. May the peace of the Christ-child be always with you, David & Marilyn Best
