  1. May 25, 2017 Choosing Homes for Sale for the Elderly: What You Need to Know Image 1What Elderly People Should Consider Looking for in Homes for Sale Whether it’s for yourself or for an elderly family member, finding the right retirement property can be hard. To ensure you’re safe, secure and happy in a property for the rest of your years, there are a few key things you’ll need to think about. While your exclusive buyer’s agent will show you the right kind of homes for sale, it’s up to you to be specific in what you need in preparation for retirement. Think About Access There are all kinds of questions about access you’ll need to ask yourself. Firstly, how will you get into and around the property? Are stairs an issue, or are you confident you’ll be able to navigate them no matter what? Page | 1

  2. If you’re concerned about your mobility, it may be best to purchase a property with few or no stairs. Look for wide doorways and enough space to move through each room with a walker or in a wheelchair. The ability to add a stair lift or indoor elevator to your home will also be beneficial if your ability to get around declines in the future. A home that can adapt to your needs as you get older is going to be the best option. Could that plush double shower accommodate a seat to rest upon, and is there space to install a ramp so you can always enjoy your garden? These are the features of a home you’ll come to appreciate the most. Location is Important While most people want to live in a rural location when they’re older, you must ask yourself if this is the most practical option. While you’ll get plenty of fresh air and live a quiet life, consider whether you’ll begin to feel isolated if you can no longer drive a car, or access the community alone. You may prefer a location where you can easily walk to a shop, restaurant or community center, so you can always have an active social life. In addition to this, family will want to come and visit you, so check that the location you want to live in makes it practical for them to do so. There’s no right or wrong answer as to where you should live. Just make sure you’ve considered the future when you make your choice. Outdoor Spaces Promote Good Health Choosing a property in an area with plenty of outdoor spaces could have a significant benefit to your health. Much research has been done into how gardens and being outside affects a person’s health, and it’s almost all good news. People who spend time gardening are up to 47% less likely to be diagnosed with dementia than those who don’t, and absorbing lots of vitamin D from the sun’s rays will help to keep your bones strong and your immune system healthy. If you’re ready to make your final move, and need help to make it happen, contact a trusted exclusive buyer’s agent for advice about suitable properties in your area. Page | 2
