  1. INTRODUCTION*Please read first*

  2. Hello, I'm Borgesio, and I'll be introducing you to Derren Brown's own version of the Major System for memorizing numbers, dates, more Things than simply 1 and 2, and at least one list of fish. INTRODUCTION*Please read first*

  3. The key to learning the Derren Brown number system is replacing numbers with letters. INTRODUCTION*Please read first*

  4. More accurately, you are replacing them with consonantSOUNDS.

  5. 0 = s/z • 1 = l • 2 = n • 3 = m • 4 = r • 5 = f/v • 6 = b/p • 7 = t • 8 = sh/ch/j

  6. And • 9 = g (hard g sound as in "good")

  7. Again... • 0 = s/z • 1 = L • 2 = n • 3 = m • 4 = r • 5 = f/v • 6 = b/p • 7 = t • 8 = sh/ch/j • 9 = g

  8. Again... • 0 = s/z • 1 = L • 2 = n • 3 = m • 4 = r • 5 = f/v • 6 = b/p • 7 = t • 8 = sh/ch/j • 9 = g Don't think about it too hard!There'll be plenty of time to learn it later!

  9. From this you can make many words by adding any vowel you like. For instance, "1" can be the words "low" "lie" or "ale."

  10. From this you can make many words by adding any vowel you like. For instance, "1" can be the words "low" "lie" or "ale." • ← he could be cursing at you and you don't even know it!

  11. This is why none of the primary numerals (0-9) are replaced with vowels.* • *Yes, w can be a vowel.

  12. The MOST important factor in a good number system is creating vivid imagery. Of the three words for "1," which can you most easily conjure up in your imagination in an instant?

  13. A) lowC) ALE B)lie

  14. A) lowC) ALE B)lieGo ahead. Choose one.

  15. A) lowowC) ALEB)lieGo ahead. Choose one. Remember only one answer is correct.

  16. A) lowowC) ALE :) B)lieGo ahead. Choose one. Remember - only one (*cough*1*cough*l*cough*ale) answer is correct. Don't worry. This is only a basic intelligence test.

  17. Did you guess ale?

  18. Did you guess ale? • No? Well, too bad because that's the answer!

  19. With the Major System nouns usually work best.

  20. With the Major System nouns usually work best. • Like a nice cold pale ale.

  21. If you have trouble picturing it, well, that's why the gods created Memrise.

  26. That's all for now. Now for a little refreshment! I mean refresher. See you in a bit.

  27. ...

  28. * I'll bet some of you (curious rabble) are still wondering why Derren Brown, famed conjuror, mentalist and intriguing charlatan, chose THESE sounds to represent numbers. Well, that would be telling. If you really want to know the magician's secret (and many more!), you can pick up a copy of his book "Tricks of the Mind" online (yes, even if you live in the States like I do. I got it dirt cheap, too, like pocket change cheap, from the UK version of a certain really, really big online book/everything store that you're probably familiar with). Alternately you could just think about it for a minute and it would probably make sense. I'm sure Derren approves of both methods. • Especially since he doesn't make a dime off the sale of used books.

  29. Still here? • Oh, all right. I'll give you the 8. The “gh” in eight is silent, so it might as well have a sound. The soft g and its cousins are good enough and versatile enough. Now get on with it!
