  1. The Doctrines behind US Foreign Policy Presented by http://schoolofresearch.org/ http://schoolofresearch.org/

  2. Background • U.S. foreign policy has a basis on several doctrines. • Doctrines guide the general nature and direction of the interaction between the U.S. and the world. • Also guide the nature of U.S. reactions and relationships with other societies and countries. • Include the Monroe Doctrine, the Roosevelt Corollary, the Good Neighbour Policy, and the Nixon Doctrine. http://schoolofresearch.org/

  3. The Monroe Doctrine • Reflects a significant statement of American foreign policy by President Monroe. • President was clear on the concept that America would not tolerate European countries in their attempts to colonize in the Americas or any interference of the independent states. • Main objective of this foreign policy was to prevent attempts by the European nations to colonize territory in the North American continent not yet claimed. http://schoolofresearch.org/

  4. The Monroe Doctrine • United States had hoped to expand its control over areas such as Southwest, Central, and South America, and the Northern Pacific. • Fears over the British, French, and Russian intentions to colonize the region. • Expansion of the size of the United States would be vital in increasing the volume of resources and power. • Used by future presidents in the enhancement of control over some Latin American countries, with the aim of protecting their independence. http://schoolofresearch.org/

  5. The Roosevelt Corollary • Main objective was to prevent or minimize the domination of American nations by European countries. • Sought to prevent European intervention in relation to the affairs of the American countries. • U.S. sought to befriend countries in the American peninsula in an attempt to gain influence over their political directions. http://schoolofresearch.org/

  6. The Roosevelt Corollary • In 1905, following the threat of invasion of the Dominican Republic by European debt collectors, the United States intervened. • U.S. seized the customs houses in the island nation and ruled that the nation would remain a protectorate until the realization of stability. http://schoolofresearch.org/

  7. The Good Neighbour Policy • Aimed at the enhancement of the relationship between the United States and Latin American countries. • Main objective was to achieve quality and effective relationships (good neighbourhood) with the Latin American nations so as to fight colonization-related tensions. • Involved support for strong local leaders, development of national guards, economic and social/cultural penetration, and Pan-Americanism. http://schoolofresearch.org/

  8. The Good Neighbour Policy • Enabled the United States to keep an eye on the Latin American region, protecting it against interference from European countries. • During the Second World War, all 21 Latin American governments supported the United States in the context of this policy. http://schoolofresearch.org/

  9. The Nixon Doctrine • Doctrine in 1969 was vital in the adoption of a peaceful foreign policy, rather than the continuation of the unpopular armed intervention. • United States adopted a more friendly policy by offering assistance in military defence when requested. • Also offered its assistance as a shield in case of the use of nuclear power in threats to the freedom of its allies. • Was essential in the development of a friendly relationship between the United States and Latin America. http://schoolofresearch.org/
