Scholarships and Bursaries Scholarships bursary • An award for something: - Marks/Academics - Activities - Volunteer Work - Essays - videos - accomplishments • A bursary is typically an award for a student with financial need. • Bursaries may have academic requirements but are generally focused on helping students who do not have the resources to pay for school on their own.

Where do I find scholarships and bursaries? • The Grade 12 bulletin board outside the counselling centre – need to check it every week! • Student career news – texted to you every month – you need to be signed up to receive this • Yconic.com – make a profile • www.scholartree.ca– make a short profile and it will search 1,000’s of scholarships for you! Prairie south scholarships • Prairiesouth.ca – students-scholarships - central • Do not APPLY until February!! There are ones to apply online and ones that say ‘see your counsellor’ – do not! I will deliver those to you on one application end of april. Post-secondary institution – you must check for deadlines! • Ask parents to check their place of work! • Your place of work! • Search the internet

Reference Letters • Before you ask someone to write you a reference letter, you must do the following: • Pick up a “Request for Reference Letter” form from under the Gr. 12 bulletin board (first file holder). • Fill out the information on the form, attach a copy of the scholarship and your chart. • When you ask someone to write you a letter, please give them this package and give them time to write it. • Do not ask someone for a letter the night before as that’s what you’ll get, “a night before letter”. Give people time to do a good job (minimum one week and two is perfect). Character Reference always have on hand Have someone that knows you write a general letter of reference on your character, what type of person you are, your values, goals, accomplishments, etc… Other references should be written according to what the scholarship is looking for. Ask the people that can comment on the things they are looking for. Who Do I ask? - teachers, principal, vice principal, counsellors, employers, volunteer supervisors, clergy, business people, coaches, etc… do not ask a relative to write you a reference letter as it will not be accepted! When you ask someone, always provide them with your chart (*handout – next screen) and a “Request for

SAT or ACT? • Are you interested in studying in the states? • You will need to prepare to write one of these tests • Two testing sessions have already passed • Check with student services for dates and info OR • You can check out www.sat.org or www.ACT.org (practice exams, study tips and materials, registration, examples, question of the day, etc…

  8. Grade 12 interviews The most important meeting you will have in your high school career! It is mandatory for every single graduating student

  10. What do I need to do? • Complete the yellow career planning guide and Pink booklet. Handed out today. If you are planning on doing an apprenticeship, we have a different assignment for you, please ask. • Collect all materials as listed on front of the guide • Pay attention to each step and come prepared!!! • Book a time for your interview, enter in your phone and show up! It really ruins it for others if you don’t show up and they could have had that spot. Be respectful of everyone’s time. • We will post a schedule after SEE YOUR FUTURE • Bring assessments from as many career tests as you can but you must bring: • Personality test (Four Letters) • Myblueprint results

Saskatchewan post-secondary institutions University of regina University of Sask saskpolytech Ask for documents to be sent at your grade 12 interview Can start applying now If marks from grade 11 are not very good, you can apply for most programs after 1st semester Will use your highest marks for admissions whether they are gr. 12 or gr. 11 marks! Start applying now and note that education, kin, and Animal Bio Resources are due dec. 1 for early admission You must order official transcripts asap Best and brightest scholarships must be applied for program and the scholarships: by dec. 15 Once you receive an acceptance letter, all other correspondence will be through email only. High demand programs are open now for application Fqfa – apply immediately!!! Many diploma programs that can turn into degrees with two more years at a university Trades/apprenticeship Right after applying you will need to send in your documents – do not wait for your gr. 12 interview to do this – see US! Nursing applications here

  12. Out of province post-secondary institutions • If you are looking at schools outside of Saskatchewan: • Check their admission policy • Check deadlines for admissions • Find out how your credits will transfer to that province’s credit system. (We can help you with this)

COMM 103 – take online and get dual credit for Business 30.

  16. “see your future” Career fair Queensbury Downs Centre Regina, SK Tuesday, November 5, 2019 WE will be taking a bus: Leaving at 8:50 am and getting back by 3:00 pm Over 100 booths of schools and careers! Please sign up at student services, take a permission form, and keep the booklet to bring on the bus with you. The school is covering transportation costs for this trip. You will need to bring money for lunch, along with pens, and a book bag to carry materials that you collect. We will post sign-up sheet October 22
