  1. How to Care for Your Skin as You Approach Menopause Menopause can be a challenging time. Aside from the usual symptoms—irritability, weight gain, night sweats, and flashes—you may also see noticeable changes in your skin. Does it look dryer, uneven, or feels rough? Has it become more sensitive to UV rays? Don’t panic and don’t let menopause get the better of you. With the right skin care treatment, you can manage your skin and improve its condition. What causes bad skin during menopause? Estrogen receptors in your skin cause sebum production, which lubricates the skin and creates collagen. But as your hormones fluctuate, estrogen levels may decrease. This results in less supple skin and noticeable volume loss and sagging. And because the hormone is also essential to maintaining your skin’s elastin, you might notice that your skin feels less bouncy. Your testosterone levels decrease during this time, too, making your sebaceous glands less active. While this may make you less prone to acne, it can result in dryness and prominent wrinkles. What can you do to care for your skin?

  2. If you notice some sagging, don’t panic. You can always try a skin tightening treatment to improve its condition, as well as other treatments that will target dryness and wrinkles. ○ Look for skincare products with more moisturising content. This often means switching to a creamier cleanser while avoiding gel-based or foam types with active ingredients that can dry the skin, such as alpha-hydroxy acids. ○ Invest in a good night cream. Instead of using your daytime moisturiser at bedtime, consider using a richer night cream. It’s more occlusive than lightweight daytime lotions, so it locks more water into your skin to keep it properly hydrated. Check the active ingredients, too. Hyaluronic acid is a good ingredient in skin care treatment products that introduce more moisture into your skin. ○ Stay hydrated to ward off wrinkles. Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that help reveal a fresher and brighter layer of skin. They can increase skin thickness, too. However, they may cause dryness and worsen the appearance of wrinkles. This is why experts recommend using only a pea-sized amount once or twice a week. You can increase the frequency as your skin learns to tolerate it. ○ Wear sunscreen. During menopause, your skin will be more sensitive to UV exposure, which can advance skin ageing. Make it a habit to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (at least SPF 30) to your face and exposed areas of your skin before you go outside. You can also help your skin recover from sun damage by applying antioxidants, like vitamin C. ○ Switch to anti-ageing skincare products. Ageing skincare involves more specialised products and treatments to target the signs such as fine lines, sagging skin, and wrinkles while preventing dryness. ○ DMK Skin has a range of skincare products and solutions for skin tightening treatment and other needs, such as brightening, age management, and enzyme therapy. Book an appointment to let an in-house professional examine your skin and recommend the best skin care treatment for your particular case.
