ADRIANNE NELSON

Osteoarthritis, often called "wear and tear" arthritis, is the most prevalent form of arthritis affecting nearly all vertebrates, including porpoises and dinosaurs. It is a chronic condition resulting from the breakdown of cartilage, the slippery tissue that cushions joints. Symptoms include joint pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion, while treatments vary from medication to lifestyle changes. Preventive measures such as maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and protecting your joints are crucial for managing osteoarthritis effectively.

  2. DESCRIPTION OF OSTEOARTHRITIS Called the "wear and tear" arthritis, osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. Nearly all vertebrates suffer from osteoarthritis, including porpoises and whales, and those long-extinct giants, the dinosaurs. It is a chronic disease in which the cartilage breaks down. Cartilage is a slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint, allowing the bones to glide over one another. It also absorbs energy from the shock of physical movement. When cartilage in a joint deteriorates osteoarthritis occurs.
