Almanac • Includes up-to-date information on a variety of topics • Published yearly • Used to quickly find brief facts • Use the index to look up keywords in the almanac
Dictionary • Shows spellings, meanings, parts of speech, pronunciation, and etymology (origin) of words in alphabetical order. • The guide words help you to locate a word in the dictionary. They appear at the top of the dictionary page. • They are abridged (shortened) or unabridged (contains all words in the English language).
Encyclopedia • Includes several books; usually each letter (A-Z) is a different volume • Includes pictures and information about almost every subject • Useful for researching a subject
Periodicals—newspapers and magazines • Periodicals are newspapers, magazines or journals • Periodicals are good for current (the latest) information because they are published daily, weekly, or monthly • Power Library can help you locate a periodical article online.
Thesaurus • Mainly used to find synonyms for words • Useful in adding a variety of words to a writing assignment
