General Depot Command -Weapons Example of “Demilitarization” Receiving used AK-47 weapons. • Taji GDC Class V is the largest weapons storage area in Iraq. • The Class V section consists of fourteen warehouses containing weapons ranging from various 9MM Pistols, AK-47’s, RPG’s, Shotguns, M-16’s, M-4’s, to 60/120mm mortars. • 80,000 captured enemy weapons. 20. So how does disposition relate to the other functions? • Procurement –The length of the program drives follow-on programs; item managers “own” system until the end • Distribution - US Army saved money by disposing instead of returning items to home bases • Sustainment– parts for supply; maintenance gets the job done • Supply and Maintenance both involved in the final decision….Should we keep the item? Is it something we can use? Can we fix it? Is it worth fixing? • DON’T JUST THROW IT AWAY……….

  21. Review • Why worry about Disposition? • Examples of success stories • Some things to think about --- organize, who’s in charge, create a disciplined approach
