WHY HE WAS CONVICTED ✪Berkowitz confessed in the killing of six people and wounding several others ✪His crimes became legendary because of the bizarre content in the letters that he wrote to the police and the media and his reasons for committing the attacks ✪“Operation Omega” was formed in the search for Berkowitz, consisting of over 200 detectives, making it one of the largest police searches in New York City history

  3. BACKGROUND OF THE CRIME ✪From July of 1976 to‘77, Berkowitz killed 6 victims and wounded 7 others ✪All shootings took place in New York City ✪Weapon of choice was a .44 Caliber pistol, which lead to his nickname

  4. BERKOWITZ CASE ✪This case is significant to the study of law because of the violation of human rights to the victims ✪His six life sentences added up to 365 years imprisonment ✪Berkowitz has been trialed for probation and has been rejected every appearance.

  5. BACKGROUND OF THE RESPONDENTS ✪The disturbing letters written by Berkowitz to his victims were easily used as evidence in the procecution stages. ✪Because Berkowitz owned to the murder’s, this made it easy for the respondents to prove his guilty status.

  6. EVIDENCE PRESENTED ✪The most important piece of evidence presented was the .44 Caliber weapon the police found when searching Berkowitz’s apartment. ✪The other piece of evidence was the written letters Berkowitz wrote to and about his victims.

  7. JURY DECISION AND SENTENCE ✪As stated before, the jury’s decision to the Berkowitz crimes were easily administered due to Berkowitz pleading guilty to the killings. ✪As a result, Berkowitz was sentenced to 365 years imprisonment at the Attica Corectional facility.

  8. THEORIES ✪Positivism- Berkowitz could be categorized into a “Born-Killer” due to his unstructured family status and born into a troubled environment. ✪Ecological School- The high crime rated in New York City can contribute to Berkowitz’s thrive for murder.

  9. BERKOWITZ TODAY ✪Today, Berkowitz is a Born-Again Christian and known as a model prisoner. ✪Berkowitz had his third parole hearing in May 2010. His next scheduled appearence is May 2012.
