  1. How to construct a STRONG thesis statement/topic sentence/controlling idea Controlling idea

  2. What is the difference between the thesis statement in the introduction and the controlling idea a body paragraph?

  3. A thesis statement Is a short statement, usually one sentence, that summarizes the main point or claim of the essay. All the other paragraphs in the story are about/support the thesis statement/introductory controlling idea It is developed, supported, and explained in the text with examples and evidence. Without a thesis statement, you will lose your audience.

  4. Example • In The Outsiders, describe how labels and stereotyping can affect someone’s interactions with others.

  5. 1. Ponyboy misunderstands his brother, Darry.2. He has a hard time getting along with Dally, his fellow gang member.3. He dislikes the Socs. The main protagonist, Ponyboy, allows his perception of others to cloud reality so that he first misunderstands his brother, Darry, his fellow gang-member, Dally, and all of the Socs.

  6. Controlling idea in a body paragraph A topic sentence/controlling idea is the main idea of each paragraph that supports your thesis statement. All the other sentences in the paragraph should support the topic sentence. It helps the reader understand the message of the paper.

  7. It is neither too broad nor too narrow. If it is too broad, you will not be able to discuss it in a single paragraph. Mystery novels are fun to read. If it is too narrow, you will have difficulty writing an entire paragraph about the topic. The last mystery novel I read was 300 pages long. Just right: The plot of the novel May Tomorrow Never Come is suspenseful.

  8. A topic sentence/controlling idea • Names the topic • Expresses an idea about the topic Successful students know how to manage study time. Topic: successful students Idea: know how to manage study time

  9. Tips: • Use a transition word or phrase • Use key words from the prompt or thesis statement • Use the reason you listed your thesis Prompt: In The Outsiders, describe how labels and stereotyping can affect someone’s interactions with others. Another person Pony misjudges in The Outsiders is his brother Darry. **This whole paragraph will provide support and text-evidence to support the topic sentence.
