Context • Millennium Declaration and MDGs • Increasing recognition of the centrality of employment for poverty reduction • Declaration and Plan of Action of the Extra-ordinary Summit on Employment Creation and Poverty Alleviation • SADC Regional Indicative Strategic development Plan (RISDP) • National Development Frameworks • place poverty alleviation through employment creation as key national priority

  4. Country Level Interventions • Support to Labour Force Surveys in South Africa, Zambia, Mauritius and Zimbabwe • Training on Labour Market Information in Botswana and Tanzania • Support to Zambia and Mauritius to revise compilation of CPI

  5. SADC • Supported SADC training on CPI • Labour Market Information (LMI) and LMI Systems training for eight SADC countries • Initiated dialogue with the defunct SADC - ELS to develop an LMIS project with SADC

  6. Regional • New African Labour Market Indicators Library project • Build upon the ILO’s global Labour Market Indicators Library Network (LMIL) • Along the line of the Global Employment Trends and Panorama Laboral • Feed into the proposed “Employment Trend Report for Africa”

  7. How can the ILO support the project? • Support training on labour force surveys and LMIS • Including more specific interventions targeting LMI in the informal economy • Facilitate study tours to foster ‘learnings’ and networks on key aspects of Labour Statistics • Other areas identified by this meeting
