  9. Rules Quiz (question #1) True or False? A coach may provide a current student-athlete with a wedding present

  10. Quiz Question #1 Answer • True- NCAA Interpretation: “determined that such an arrangement would be precluded, unless it is demonstrated that the coach provides such gifts to all the weddings he or she attends, and the gift is consistent with the type of gifts normally given”

  11. Rules Quiz (question #2) True or False? During the first week of class a student-athlete may compete while enrolled less than full-time, so long as they are sitting in on the classes that they intend on adding and their advisor is aware of the situation.

  12. John Pop Quiz (question #2 answer) The answer is false: • 14.1.8.2 Requirement for Competition. • To be eligible for competition, a student-athlete shall be enrolled in at least a minimum full-time program of studies leading to a baccalaureate or equivalent degree, which shall not be less than 12 semester or quarter hours. (Revised: 6/1/07)

  13. Key Points to Remember • For practice only, student-athlete may participate in first five days of semester while still working out their academic schedule; however, they must be enrolled at least part-time • For competition, student-athlete must be enrolled full-time (always alwaysalways!) other than between terms and in their last semester of competition if approved for graduation (through Enrollment Services, SAS and Compliance) in <12 hours.

  21. Coach Dismissals related to Student-Athlete Issues • Reminder that new generation of student-athlete does want to be coached well and worked hard, • Reminder when things go wrong with a student-athlete situation, best to inform administration and deal with the issue…do not cover it up.. • In 2 of the 3 cases, it appears the situation could have been solved without the coach being fired…….. • Remember….things always come up with so many student-athletes and sports…and sometimes people make mistakes…... It is how we manage the issues that is important…..

  22. Scholarship Costs • As you know fees increased again this year after our budget was set. • As these costs rise , our Annual Fund has gone up but not at the same rate • We all need to be more mindful as we use scholarship dollars: • Make student-athletes aware that failing grades and D’s that cause class retakes…..cost money and delay graduation • Make every effort to stay within the 75-25 scholarship guidelines for your sport…this is our budgeted base……in-state is definitely less costly than out-of-state • Encourage gifts to the BDF annual fund…..scholarship dollars are the basis for our program….

  23. Initial Eligibility • Please continue to encourage your PSAs to have all transcripts through their Junior year/7thSem senior year sent to the Eligibility Center for certifications. • Please make sure that they have ALL their Test Scores submitted as well. • 7th Semester transcripts (& 8thSem IP schedules) should be submitted to advisors as soon as they are available. • Final Amateurism Request- April 1
