  11. Today • Division in N. Ireland due to religion is still a problem today - N. Ireland is Protestant - there is a large group of Catholics in N.I. who feel mistreated by the majority - The Republic of Ireland is Catholic

  12. The Economy • Strong economy • London is G.B.’s center for world trade and industry • North Sea: oil and natural gas • Computer and software (Ireland) • Service industry (banking, tourism, insurance)

  13. Scandinavia • Home to Vikings – warriors; excellent sailors; great explorers (Iceland, Greenland & 1st Europeans to reach N. America)

  14. Scandinavia Today • have much in common - similar political views - languages - religion • enjoy some of the world’s highest standards of living

  15. Sweden • Largest and most populous • 80% live in urban areas • Stockholm – largest city & capital • is a neutral country

  16. Denmark • smallest, but most powerful • most densely populated • 50% of the land used for farming

  17. Greenland • really part of N. America geographically • is a territory of Demark • most of it is uninhabitable • movement for independence has been working (needs Denmark)

  18. Norway • has one of the longest coastlines in the world • “fjords” • Oslo is the capital • has valuable resources • has highest GDP in region

  19. Finland • capital and largest city – Helsinki • trade is important • forest and paper products are major exports

  20. Iceland • is greener than the name implies • geothermal energy • people come to see geysers, volcanoes, and glaciers • 70% of exports are fish
