Preparations you can make nowINFORMATION FROMUNIVERSITY • Keep in contact with your final choice university. • They will probably issue CASs soon after A level results day. • When they issue your CAS, read it carefully. Make sure you have the documents they have listed and that all the information on the CAS is correct

The application processAPPLYING FOR A TIER 4GENERAL STUDENT VISA • Application forms can be found at www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk • You will almost certainly need to apply on line. • Or you should use form VAF9 • On this website, there are guidance notes to help you fill out the application form correctly, called ‘Tier 4 of the Points-Based System Policy Guidance’

The application process – the CAS CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Study) • An electronic document containing information about you and the course you are going to attend • Identified by CAS number • Your Tier 4 sponsor (university) will issue your CAS • You must have a valid CAS number when you make your application.

  7. The application process – the CASEvidence used to issue your CAS Your Tier 4 Sponsor will list evidence used to make your offer on your CAS statement. This may include: • A Level Results (verified by original transcript • level of English language (verified by IELTS)

  8. CAS Statement • Most Tier 4 Sponsors are providing students with a CAS Statement. This will show the same information as your CAS and will help you complete your Tier 4 Student Application form.

  9. Preparing your applicationSUPPORTING DOCUMENTS (to submit with your application) • CAS number • Evidence Documents listed on the CAS • Passport • Photographs • Bank Statements All supporting documents will need to be submitted with your application except the CAS statement.

  10. Preparing your applicationDOCUMENTS USED • Any documents submitted with the application form MUST be originals and on official letter-headed paper or stationery of the organisation providing the document.

Preparing your applicationTranslated documents • If you use an original document which is not in English, the original must be sent with a fully certified translation by a professional translator. • Any translated documents must include:the translator’s qualification confirmation from the translator that it is an accurate translation the date of translation the translator’s signature

  12. Preparing your applicationPassport • You must send your original passport and any previous passports.

  13. Preparing your applicationPhotographs You must provide 2 recent passport photographs of yourself. All photographs must have your name written on the back. All the photographs should be: • Measure 45mm x 35mm • Be in colour • Be taken against a light grey or cream background • Be clear and of good quality • Not be framed or backed • Not be digitally altered • Be full face, without sunglasses, head or head covering unless you wear this for religious reasons Use a paperclip to attach an envelope containing both photographs to your application form. DO NOT USE STAPLES • The UKBA have a template which you can find on the UKBA website where you can check your photograph will meet the requirements:

  14. Explanation of fundsMaintenance Funds You must be able to show that you can support yourself financially during your studies. UKBA have set guidelines on how much money you must have as follows: The money you must have must cover your course fees for your first year of study plus *two months’ living costs. The amount for living costs will depend on where you study *you only need to have 2 months’ living costs because you already have an ‘established presence in the UK’

Explanation of fundsLiving costs • If you study in London you will be required to show you have course fees for one year plus £2000 living costs (2 months at £1000 per month) • If you study outside London you will be required to show you have course fees for one year plus £1600 living costs (2 months at £800 per month)

Explanation of fundsEvidence of funds You can use one of the following as evidence: • Bank Statement • Building Society Statement • Letter from a financial institute – must be from either the Financial Services Authority or an official regulatory body of the country which the institution is in.

Explanation of fundsEvidence of funds –conditions • The money must be in a bank account in your name or that of your parent (s) • The money must be held in cash • If it is not a UK bank account, you will need to write on the value in £ sterling according to www.oanda.com • If you want to use a joint bank account as proof of your money, you must be named on the account, along with at least one other person • You must show that you have held the required amount of money for a CONSECUTIVE 28 DAY PERIOD (finishing on the date of the closing balance) – the end of that 28 day period must not be more than one month before the date of your application

Explanation of fundsBank/Building Society statements These statements must show: • Your name (or name of account holder) • The account number • The date of the statement • The financial institute’s name and logo • The amount of money available (the above information also applies to letter from a financial institute)

  19. Explanation of fundsIf using your parents’ bank account • You will need to provide evidence of the relationship (eg birth certificates)

  20. Maintenance Funds Summary • All monies must be in a bank account in your name or your parents’ name and for a consecutive period of at least 28 days • The total amount will be the cost of one year’s tuition fees and two months’ living costs

Explanation of funds - tuitionIf you have already paid all or part of your Tuition Fees before you apply for a visa • If you have paid your tuition fees before you apply to extend your visa, this will be shown on your CAS. You must check with your Tier 4 sponsor that they have added this information. • If it has not been included in your CAS, you must send evidence of payment in your application. This must be an original paper receipt issued by your Tier 4 sponsor confirming the amount you have paid.

  22. If you have already paid part of your accommodation costs • The university should show the amount you have paid on your CAS and you can deduct up to £1000 of this advance payment from the amount of maintenance you have to show in your bank account.

  23. BEST TO APPLY FOR NEWVISA BEFORE YOU RETURN TO THE UK • Your university are not allowed to enrol you until you have applied for a new visa. Therefore do not wait until you return to the UK. Apply for your new visa before you return. You can apply for your visa up to 3 months before your course begins.

  24. Credibility interviews new for 2013 • The UKBA have said that they will do video interviews with randomly selected visa applicants in China to ensure they are genuine. • None of you have any need to worry if you are interviewed. • More details about the interviews (in English and Chinese) will be put on Moodle (International)

  25. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU HAVE TO APPLY WHEN YOU RETURN TO THE UK • If your CAS is not issued in time • If you have to return to the UK early or if you remain in the UK throughout the summer.

  26. IF YOU CANNOT APPLY FOR YOUR VISA IN YOUR HOME COUNTRY • You will need to return to the UK on your current (JLC) visa and bring evidence of your offer of a university place • You will then need to apply for a new visa as soon as possible as described in the preceding slides but make sure you use the correct form for applying in the UK • Your university are not allowed to enrol you until you have APPLIED for a new visa and you will need to provide proof of your application (such as reference number and evidence of posting)

  27. Police Registration Certificate IF YOU DO APPLY IN THE UK • You must provide a Police Registration Certificate. • Therefore make sure you have updated the Certificate at the Police Station and it has the same address as on your application form.

  28. Documents to bring back to UK (carry in your hand luggage) • OFFER LETTER FROM THE UNIVERSITY You must carry this document as UKBA Border Control may ask why you are returning to the UK to study with limited leave to remain. If you have any problems at Border Control, call the college emergency number.

  29. Visa Fee IMPORTANT • Remember to include your fee for the visa to be issued. You must have sufficient funds or your visa will be refused. The visa costs £298 if applying from outside the UK. • The cost of applying in the UK is £406 to apply by post (plus cost of separate biometric appointment) or £781 to apply at a PEO
