  1. Growing Success: Cheating & Plagiarism Revised August 2011

  2. CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM Prevention of Cheating and Plagiarism: • Common preventative strategies and procedures for cheating and plagiarism are communicated to all students, and employed by, all teachers, in all subject areas; • Common preventative strategies and procedures are regularly reviewed when required (ex. as part of review for quizzes, tests, examinations and prior to all major assignments and formal essays); • Students will seek clarification when required from the school and/or teacher to assist in creating authentic work; • Teachers will guide students, when appropriate, to ensure that all aspects of school cheating and plagiarism procedures are followed; • Common procedures for the invigilation of quizzes, tests, and examinations;

  3. CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM • For all major assessments, teacher/student conference(s) must take place prior to the deadline for submission of final student product; • Teach the proper mechanism to be used by students to ensure that proper credit / references are given to the author’s intellectual property; • Ensure every student understands the proper citation method prior to completing the assignment.

  4. CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM Detection of Incidents of Cheating and Plagiarizing: Schools will communicate to students and parents the means by which incidents of cheating and plagiarizing are detected. These include: • the teacher, in his/her professional judgment, identifies significant discrepancies in the quality of a student’s work (i.e. student product that is far superior to previous submissions); • the teacher identifies similarities in one or more students’ submissions; • the teacher is able to match the student’s work with its original source. To aid in the detection of plagiarism teachers may use electronic software (i.e. turnitin).

  5. CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM Consequences for Cheating or Plagiarizing on a Summative Evaluation: • Teachers and Principals should employ progressive discipline when it comes to incidences of cheating and plagiarism. • Discipline should be considered a learning opportunity and take into consideration the following four factors: - The grade level of the student; - The maturity of the student; - The number and frequency of incidents; and • The individual circumstances of the student. • Consultations on possible consequences should include the teacher, department head (where applicable) and principal. Communication with the student and parent /guardian should follow immediately.
