  32. Example • Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring Fellowship of the Ring is the first book in the Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien. The setting is Middle Earth at the end of the Third Age. The beginning takes place in the Shire where Hobbits live peacefully. Other locations include Bree, the Old Forest, Rivendell, Moria, Lothlorien and Anduin River. Bree is a village that the four Hobbits meet Aragorn in. The Old Forest is where Frodo runs into the Ringwraiths. The Ringwraiths are sent by Sauron to retrieve the Lord of the Rings. Rivendell and Lothlorien are both Elvin cities. The Mines of Moria once was a great Dwarfen city until the Dwarfs dug to deep and awaken something evil. The Fellowship of the Ring starts off in the Shire around the time of Bilbo’s (Frodo’s uncle) 111th birthday. On Bilbo’s birthday, he gives Frodo a ring. The ring turns out to be the Lord of the Rings and the original owner is looking for it. Once Gandalf realizes what the ring is, he instructs Frodo to go to Rivendell. Sam goes with Frodo on his journey along with Merry and Pippin. Aragorn also meets with the Hobbits on their way. Eventually they get to Rivendell where there is a meeting to decide what to do with the Ring; this is how the fellowship is formed. The fellowship includes: Frodo, Gandalf, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas and Gimli. This fellowship begins their long mission to destroy the ring. My favorite character is Frodo. Frodo never expected anything like this to happen to him but he was longing for a journey. Frodo maybe only a miniature human with big feet but he has more heart and courage than most characters. J.R.R. Tolkien gives the impress that Frodo was meant for this hardship. The most shocking part of the book is in the Mines of Moria. Gandalf is particularly worried about entering the Mines but the other members of the Fellowship want to go in. Orks are awakened when the fellowship enters the mines and the noise eventually awakens Balrog, an evil creature. Balrog chases down the Fellowship to a bridge. Gandalf knows the others will not make it if he does not do something. So he speaks the famous line, “You shall not pass.” The Balrog cannot pass. The Fellowship of the Ring is a very interesting book because J.R.R Tolkien did not just write a book, he created a world. The characters are interesting and expose both flaws and strengths. The story line is creative and captivating. I would definitely read this book again and recommended it to anyone who enjoys fantasy. This book is also great for the adventurist because that is what the book is about; one long adventure to destroy the Ring that could destroy everyone. Rubric
