  1. Timed Writing Techniques for learning to write under pressure!!!!

  2. Why? • SAT test preparation • AP test • College Entrance/Exit exams • Time management

  3. The Writing Process Step: % of time • Pre-write/Brainstorm ______ • Organize ______ • Write a draft ______ • Edit/Revise ______ • Final copy ______

  4. Steps for a timed writing • Circle key words in the prompt. • Let yourself THINK about the topic first. • Quickly brainstorm ideas • Organize/Plan what you will write • Draft the response • Revise the response • Re-write neatly with corrections

  5. Special tips for timed writings: • Circle key words in the prompt (directions) • You probably don’t need a full introduction and conclusion paragraph. One or two sentences may be enough to begin and end. • A clear THESIS statement is a MUST. It should restate the question asked of you and then ANSWER it.

  6. Practice Timed Writing • If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be and why? Answer in an essay at least 200 words in length, written in the first person. You will only have 30 minutes to complete this timed writing.

  7. Sample Response Most people have things in their lives they are unhappy about and wish they could change. If I could change one thing about my life, I would want all of my family to live in the same town. Currently, my brothers live in North Carolina, my parents and sister live in St. Louis and all of my husband’s family lives here in Kansas City. One reason I want to change this is that I am very close to my family. My sisters and I love shopping together, sharing stories, and letting our children play together. This is hard to do when we live in different places. Another reason I need my family close is for the holidays. Every year we spend three months (August, September and October) trying to figure out the holidays, who will go where and how we will all manage to be together. Lastly, I feel jealous of my husband’s family and all of the time they get to spent together. My mom gets jealous, too, that she doesn’t get to see her granddaughters as much as my mother-in-law does. It may seem like a little thing to you, but if I could change one thing about my life, it would be to bring all of my family together to live in the same city.
