  1. Network Status of Major Hospitals in Malaysia Suhaimi Napis Director, InfoComm Development Centre, Universiti Putra Malaysia Director, E-Research Area, MYREN

  2. Hospitals in Malaysia • General hospitals: • ICT hospitals • Ordinary general hospitals • Some general hospitals are used as teaching hospitals for medical degree programs: UPM, USM, UITM, UNIMAS, UMS, and several medical colleges • Universiti Hospitals: • University Hospital: Universiti Malaya • Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia • Public Wing and Private Wing/Medical Centre

  3. ICT Hospitals • 8 hospitals designated by Ministry of Health as ICT hospitals • Heavily funded by government: state-of-the-art equipments with an integrated Total Health Information System …;-)! • Each ICT hospital has its own designated area of specialization

  4. Areas of Specialization • Hospital Selayang: Hepatobiliary,gastro-enterology • Hospital Putrajaya: Endocrinology • Hospital Serdang: Cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal • Located side by side with UPM Medical Faculty • Hospital Sg Buloh: Neurology, musculoskeletal • Hospital Ampang: Infectious disease • Hospital Pandan Johor: Genito-urinary • Hospital Kuala Lumpur: Mother and child • Hospital Alor Star:Not Sure

  5. Connectivity Status of ICT Hospitals • 100Mbps LAN • Only Streamyx (commodity broadband) at 2 Mbps! • Streamyx by Telco: • Best Effort, no QoS

  6. MYREN Topology

  7. MYREN Topology

  8. Summary and Other Issues • No dedicated network linking hospitals including ICT hospitals • Except Universiti Putra Malaysia but its only 8 mbps due to its close proximity to MYREN node • Low band width internet connectivity • Telemedicine activities needing high bandwidth is not possible • MYREN Connectivity is one of the solution • Hospital Serdang-Universiti Putra Malaysia (8 Mbps) • Hospital University (UM)-Universiti Malaya (8 Mbps) • HUKM (4+2 Mbps linking to main UKM with internal traffic) • Others close to MYREN node • Need to show proof-of-concept to the government by international participation in telemedicine projects especially those that require high capacity bandwidth • DVTS is out of the questions but higher quality streaming is possible (need input from HDTV WG)

  9. Life must go on… • Need to proceed with activities even with the present connectivity situation • Necessary to send good message to government and therefore support such dedicated links between hospitals

  10. TQ !
