Reflexive Verbs • English Grammar Connection: Reflexive verbs describe actions done to or for oneself. In English, reflexive pronouns end in –self or –selves and show that the person doing the action also receives the action. • You know that a verb is reflexive if the infinitive form ends with the letters se.
Read the following examples of reflexive verb conjugations and see if you can identify the reflexive pronouns Me peino el pelo. Te peinas el pelo. Ella se peina el pelo. Nos peinamos el pelo. Os peinais el pelo. Ellos se peinan el pelo Peinarse- to comb oneself (hair)
Reflexive Pronouns You must use a reflexive pronoun when you use a reflexive verb. Each pronoun corresponds to a different subject. nos me os te se se
Reflexive Verbs - Conjugation • In the infinitive form of reflexive verbs, the reflexive pronoun attaches to the end: bañarse • Step 1:Take off the reflexive “se” from the end of the verb lavarse

Reflexive verbs • Step 3:Change the “se” to reflect the person doing the action.
Reflexive verbs • Step 4: Place the pronoun before the conjugated verb. You do not include the regular subject pronoun because the reflexive pronoun takes its place. (Yo) Melavo Translates to: I wash myself

Reflexive and non-reflexive forms • Some verbs have both reflexive and non-reflexive forms and usages. A verb is used in it’s non-reflexive form if the action is being done to someone or something else. • Yolavo el coche de menudo. I wash the car often. • Me lavo el pelotodos los días. I wash my hair every day.
Definite articles • When you use a reflexive verb with parts of a body or clothing, use the definite article. • EJ: ¿Siempretepintas las uñas? Do you always paint your nails? • Felipe se pone los zapatos. Felipe puts on his shoes.
Pronoun PLacement • Reflexive pronouns follow the same placement rules as DOPNs • 1. Can be placed BEFORE the CONJUGATED verb. • Ej: Me voy a duchar. Tetienes que vestir para la fiesta. • 2. Can be ATTACHED to an INFINITVE • Ej: Voy a ducharme

One more thing… When using a reflexive verb you DO NOT need to use the possessive adjective “mi” before the noun. • Me peino el pelo. • Te lavas los manos. • Ella se cepilla los dientes. • Nos secamos el cuerpo. • Os pongáis la chaqueta. • Ellos se afeitan la cara.
